You could not be more wrong.

National delegates particularly are older and wealthier in their own right, and owe nothing to the RNC and usually not even to the three RNC members in their own state.

The idea that delegates on the convention floor — people who are, by and large, quite conservative and are accurately described as the base of the party — would throw over not only the top delegate getter (Trump) but also the person who got the second most delegates (Cruz) is decidedly implausible given what we know about the state of the GOP today.

Who are the delegates? How are they selected?

In most states, the delegates are appointed by the party bosses, which means they will vote how the party establishment tells them to vote, if they want any future in the party.

No, in most states delegates are NOT ‘appointed’ by ‘party bosses’. In a few states, some are, but I believe every delegate faces an election process. Even each state’s three RNC members (’part bosses’) are democratically elected except in an emergency.

Understood. Very frustrating to see how hard the GOPe is fighting against one of their own, instead of working hard to destroy the Dems.

In my state (PA), the delegates are directly elected. I will not know any of them in detail. The vast majority of voters will know nothing about them, except perhaps what gets distributed on flyers.

Rule 8.4 of the Republican State Committee of Pennsylvania's Rules states that all delegates elected by Congressional District "...shall run at large within the Districts and shall not be officially committed to any particular candidate on the ballot.".

Because this guy is an expert analyst. It is the job of these experts, whether Democrat or Republican, to put aside his own bias, and take as clinical and objective look at the other side as he can possibly manage. (Just as a judge should do when deciding a case.) This is one of those instances. This democrat expert set out to understand the mindset of the GOP convention delegates, and give an honest assessment, setting aside his own wishes, biases, opinions entirely out; indeed being very careful to make sure his bias does not distort his conclusions. He does his employer no favor if he does otherwise.

Some of the best analyses of republican politics I have ever read have been by democrats, and vice versa.

And I think this democrats expert’s conclusions could well be correct. That if the GOP establishment tries to manipulate the delegates, many of whom are the angry conservative base, into nominating an establishment hack, it could seriously back fire on the GOP establishment.

I agree, I was a delegate four years ago, county and state. Because of health issues, I decided not to try to do this again this year. The delegates are just like you. Most of the delegates that I spoke with felt just as I did; resenting Romney and preferring another candidate, usually Newt or Paul, although there were some who preferred Santorum. The delegates are just like you, but who are able to make the time and willing to take on this responsibility.

People who won’t take their own self-government seriously deserve their fleecing.

Life isn’t fair, and it’s even less fair to the ignorant and slothful.

The Founding Fathers were correctly frightened of ignorant majorities and took great pains to reduce their negative impact.

The only alternative to state sovereignty and political parties as private associations is an ever more imperious federal government.

I think Trump understands this also, and he may have tried to point this out to the GOP “leadership”, when he met with them.

I just hope they do listen to the sensible voices, all the Hillary bribes notwithstanding.

People don't have the time to make being involved in party activities their full time job. Which is why I was advocating having the candidates pick their own delegates.

Even more implausable is party unity if the front runner’s own delegates go AWOL against the will of the voter.

“Why should the GOPe care about what the Republican voters want?!”

Tar. Feathers. Rope. Lampposts.

Hugh Hewitt, Sea Island Republican and GOPe toady, has been talking brokered convention since January, when it became obvious that Jeb! and his clones are hated by the base.
