Yes, that's exactly what they aim to do. The more people understand that this is the intent, the better it can be fought. Here it is loud and clear:

The GOPe does not want to win. They want to consolidate their power and position within the DC establishment, and they cannot do that as long as a bunch of troublemakers are saying nasty things and picking fights with the Democrats. Driving the troublemakers from the party—conservatives politicians, Trump and Cruz followers—is the number one priority.

With them gone, the GOPe goes back to being handsomely rewarded as the reliable opposition to the Democrats in the DC establishment which helps to sell to the public that the move toward bigger and bigger government is a battle rather than a fait accompli.
