Don't be fooled - Elon Musk's electric cars aren't about to save the planet
The UK Telegraph ^ | April 6,2014 | BJØRN LOMBORG

Posted on 04/07/2016 9:58:28 AM PDT by Hojczyk

Reducing 1.2 tonnes of CO₂ on the EU emissions trading system costs £5; but instead, the UK Government subsidises each car with £4,500. All of the world’s electric cars sold so far have soaked up £9 billion in subsidies, yet will only save 3.3 million tonnes of CO₂. This will reduce world temperatures by 0.00001°C in 2100 – the equivalent of postponing global warming by about 30 minutes at the end of the century.

Electric cars will be a good idea, once they can compete – which will probably be by 2032. But it is daft to waste billions of pounds of public money on rich people’s playthings that kill more people through air pollution while barely affecting carbon emissions. The Tesla 3 is indeed a “zero emissions” marvel – but that is only because it does not yet exist.

This is a pop-culture bandwagon thing. People haven’t a clue about what they think they are buying. Same idiots watch “Survivor” and think it is real.

“It’s not just the range on a charge, it’s the recharge time as well...”

Well, most people who would buy it drive way less than 200 miles a day and have all night to recharge. At night, there is also a HUGE amount of spare power capacity.

For slightly extended range on a rare long trip they take, they can stop at a charging station and get an 80% charge in 30 mins.

Again, it’s not for people like me who do long trips every week. But for 90% of people I know who mostly drive around town, it would be great

I reserved a tesla model 3, not because it will save the environment but because its a great car

Is the $1000 refundable if they push the deadline into 2018 and you won't want to wait?

I leased a 2017 Chevy Volt. First GM product ever. Great car. Fun to drive. Not an environmental person either (though it would be nice to have cleaner in the Sacramento area). Just love new technology.

It’s a lot easier to clean up emissions from one coal-fired power plant (the technology has been around for at least 30 years!) than clean up emissions from millions of cars in the city.

That used to be true if you're taking 240 V alternating current charging, but now with a new version of the SAE J1779 charging plug now supporting direct current charging, we may be talking charging times of around 15 minutes.

That is true, but that is not what the Dems are after. They want to create jobs in the auto industry by making every car have all sorts of clean-green gizomos that need to be replaced by the millions every year. More union labor more union dues more campaign contributions......................

Not to be picky, but it’s more like 113HP for 1 hour (1KW approx 1.34 HP). But still no big deal.

30 minutes plus the time you spend waiting in line.

You’re forgetting losses. Systems are not 100% efficient.

“30 minutes plus the time you spend waiting in line.”

As I said, it’s not ideal for long trips.

Most of these cars would be charged at home by people who drive less than 100 miles a day and they’d never waste time at a station (unlike gas where a station is mandatory)

Not as fast or convenient as gas for longer ranges but just saying it’s *possible* for these people to take a few longer trips a year without having to rent a gas vehicle. For some, giving up convenience a few days a year is worth it.

I think the Volt concept is best because it gives you an option to charge AND keep going on gas when it runs out. And gas is available on damn near every corner.

IMO, all hybrid cars should follow that concept. A small super-efficient clean gas engine for charging a battery that is used for peak demand and braking regeneration.

You only use the peak power of a gas engine a small percentage of the time so large gas engines make no sense.

They should have marketed it as an advanced hybrid rather than an EV though. By trying to “hide” the gas engine, nobody learned about the best feature.

I always imagine all the people who come home from work.

At 6 pm, hundreds of thousands of households in every city turn on the stove, plug in their car,......(the entire electric grid melts into a puddle)

85kWh in 15 minutes, assuming no losses, is 340 kW.

You do understand how much power that is, don’t you?

I sure do, and that's going to be an awful lot of Torque on-demand at the rear wheels right off the line! ROFL!!!
