I never joined Facebook, and don’t belong to Twitter either. I can count my close friends on one hand, and besides my two sons, I have a very small group of relatives. if I want anyone to know anything, I’ll call or email them. I have no need to post my personal info online.

Anyone who uses Facebook — and I mean anyone — will one day be very sorry they ever heard of social media and were naive enough to expose their thoughts and personal doings linked to a personalized non-anonymous Internet identity.

I know that Army civilian contracts have been told to omit most personnel information.

Here we go again. This FR headline is clearly about Facebook, yet we get dozens of narcissistic bores, logging right in and jumping into the commenting pool about how they “quit Facebook”. Yawn.

All these site have become a vapid place where the truly narcissistic amongst us provide to the minute updates as if they are something more important than they actually are. In brief it’s created a place that’s about me me me and me. What I’m doing, so I’m screwing, what I’m eating etc.

It is truly a place where the unintelligent share words of wisdom as if they care about the person they are posing to or state anything of substance. The initiator of said post seeking sympathy and attention from their 200 friends pretend they care when they read their replies. All social media is kind garbage.

Does it show I detest this junk? And my career for the past 16 years is IT lol

It’s pretty simple. Declare the truth about anything on Facebook and there is a firestorm of hatred. Why countenance fools?

Someday Facebook will be just a bunch of ‘bots cross-posting to each other.

I have a bunch of Facebook accounts in cartoon names I use to log into Disqus and places like that. I use the accounts for nothing lese.

You can get around the phone number registration thingy with https://smsreceivefree.com/. You give them one of the phone numbers there and wait for them to respond with your authentication string.

The scary part is how facial recognition is used to cross reference people, groups, and associations then maintained in perpetuity.

FB is a mixed bag, kind of like life. There are people you like and enjoy hearing about. And people who fall into the other category. You take the good with the bad. Just like in any social situation you must endeavor to modestly and minimally share, and be certain to limit any public footprint.

Facebook downplayed the issue in a comment to The Information, saying, “People continue to share a ton on Facebook;

...

I hate it when they use technical terms like “ton.”

When you live in a fascist country where you can be fired from your job for declaring on FB that marriage should be between one man and one woman, then yeah, people will be wisely hesitant to share personal updates on FB

I've met, known, worked with, interacted with thousands and thousands of people over the course of my life.

I never had a problem keeping in touch with those I wanted to keep in touch with without resorting to facebook. My brother and sister-in-law have, several times over the years called or emailed me and said, "Hey, we just got a FB message from XXXXX and they said they'd like to get talk to you." Invariably my response has been, "Let them know if I wanted to keep in touch with them, I would have."

FB has sort of replaced Blog Spot for me. Only because Facebook is in my real name old friends can say “Hello” once in awhile. Mostly I post links to interesting articles there.

Holy crap! Thank you, Fai for your refreshing, honest comment. I think that Zuckerberg, the wussy lib that he is, actually deserves a Nobel nomination. This software, used by the CAUTIOUS, PRUDENT, MATURE and the NON PARANOID, is a great thing for constantly keeping up with kindred minds of family and friends. The (few) LIB posts that I see on FB are illuminating into that pathetic mindset and I have the benefit of matching an actual face with an actual name... Unlike here. However, the souls here are, mostly, strong and powerful, where no name is needed. (Perhaps some FR peeps need to get over their fear of posting where they're actually challenged and exposed?)

And yet now HR types are demanding that employees have Facebook accounts to show that they are “social”. It is not enough to be on LinkedIn. No Facebook, no job. And yes, there are things posted on Facebook that can cost someone their job, whether it be so drunken stupor photos from some party, or views that are “too conservative”, i.e. not conforming to the diversity policy.
I use my FB account mostly for keeping up with the bicycle racing community, however, I am aware that at 60 there are some points of view that “old people” should not participate in such activities.
