I’ve always thought that Blumenthal’s receipt of classified emails from the private server is the key to a criminal referral in this case.

Agree, at least once the emails forced out by Guccifer became known.
News reports imply that in his Benghazi messages, Blumenthal emailed top secret intel Hillary didn’t have TO Hillary, and that it’s a mystery where he got it (it’s always implied that maybe it came to B. from his conveniently deceased co-conspirator, ex-spook Tyler Drumheller). Poor Hillary was just a recipient, and gee, it wasn’t marked... Common sense suggests Hillary or her minions, who had access to all sorts of classified intel, was feeding it to Blumenthal who had no clearances or legal access, so B could tender political advice. Maybe intel flowed the other way, or both ways.
The FBI should have been all over Blumenthal starting 3-4 years ago, and have seized all his communications as part of a serious espionage investigation. (Nothing in the news implies this has happened — maybe “journalists” should ask).
Perhaps the FBI wants Guccifer to reveal what was in B’s AOL account BEFORE Blumenthal had two years to clean it. Who sent him classified intel, who all did he send it to? You would think the FBI would box in Blumenthal, and make him give up Hillary to avoid life in prison. But that would require a nation with the both competence and the rule of law.
