It’s the first time I’ve been warm!
Give them credit for doing what was unattainable before today.
This is a pendulum that has to land exactly at mid period with no lateral loads.
I invite all critics to do this with a pencil on a bar of floating soap. Go ahead give it a try, you have one chance to make it work each time, no do-overs. Or you have to go out a buy a new pencil for the next try until you get it right
Correction: This is the fifth attempt with four previous failures. Still spectacular.
I am totally impressed with this barge landing. It’s amazing. I’m heartened to see all these wonderful, intelligent young people who’ve worked so hard to make this mission a huge success. I was filled with pride when they started chanting USA, USA. Great day for America.
liability if something goes wrong on approach.
SpaceX has a good sense of humor too.
Look what they called the landing barge:
“Dragon will be deployed about 10 minutes after liftoff and attach to the ISS about two days after launch.
Following stage separation, the first stage of the Falcon 9 will attempt an experimental landing on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship in the Atlantic Ocean.”
Congrats. to all concerned. Great job !
Seems like an unmanned shuttle-type drone would be easier to do...............
...
Sierra Nevada has been given a contract to provide a drone cargo ship with wings, but it will still need to be launched on a rocket.
if at first you dont succeed, ......throw more money at it..............
...
I don’t see how that applies here.
Does your wife know you think of her as a barge?
How is this done with a barge, bobbing up and down in the ocean?
...
GPS and possibly other sensors and beacons once it gets close. I think SpaceX also learned from the failures.
Someone was asking why the barge. Its a safety issue. If the thing went off course a lot and crashed on land...it might be bad.
...
Sorry to disagree, but the barge landings are due to “having enough fuel” issues due to different launch requirements.
The landings are no more dangerous than the launches.
This week also has the launch of a Bigelow space station module, which can dramatically lower costs of space habitats. This year has seen SpaceX land twice, Blue Origin resuse a launcher three times, and Bigelow getting back to space. This is the best space year since Apollo.

Yes. America has a great future in space if we can figure out something productive or economical to do there.
;’) Used to teach that one in Am Lit, now they probably spend the semester bitching about White Privilege and teaching how to make molotov cockatails.
