Donors trying to draft 'Mad Dog' Mattis for presidential run
The Washington Examiner ^ | April 8, 2016 | Jacqueline Klimas

A group of wealthy donors is preparing to draft retired Marine Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis to run for president and take down Donald Trump, according to reports.

Nearly a dozen donors are willing to throw their resources behind the former head of U.S. Central Command. The group has delivered six memos to Mattis outlining how he could win the race in the hope that it will encourage him to run, the Daily Beast reported.

The game plan would be for Mattis to win enough states to keep Trump and Hillary Clinton from getting the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. The House would then pick the president, and supporters believe lawmakers would support a former general widely seen as an American hero.
.
.
.
I'd be first in line to plead with the general to come save America," John Noonan, a former national security adviser to Jeb Bush who is working on the campaign to draft Mattis, told the Daily Beast.

“draft retired Marine Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis to run for president and take down Donald Trump”

For some reason I don’t think they are talking about a political race to take down Trump!

The Veterans Party of America has had several meetings with Gen. Matis & he has told us under NO circumstances would he seek the Office of the President. He has had more than enough of the crap in dc. & wants to keep on with his charity work [the Fisher House & children of fallen service members]

He quoted lbj, “If nominated I will NOT run, if elected I will NOT serve”. And he is a man of his word too!

I don't know if Gen. Mattis falls into this category, but the problems I have with having flag officers as president are:
  1. Frequently, they have to act subservient to Congress.
  2. They are used to being able to give orders to a large organization and have them followed.
  3. The US military is very good at making certain kinds of decisions, e.g., lice is a problem in Trench warfare, okay, all troops must be clean shaven and have short hair. How would someone like this approach gun control? Would they go, people use guns to kill people, ban guns.
  4. Have flag officers are used to working within a system someone else established. It is becoming clear that the established system needs to be changed.

This election is certainly one of the weirdest ones I have ever lived through to date....

What a joke.

Nothing does more to destroy the reputation of a former U.S. military or intelligence leader than letting himself become a tool of big-government globalists in Washington.

Just when I think the election is about to settle into an expected condition, the story changes, making everything else shapeshift again.

I have never heard this Mattis speak. Does he have much stage presence. Let’s face it, personal charisma, persuasive charm and mystique are factors to consider and look for in a leader.

I don't know if he has much "charisma," but he was made famous for this legendary quote from a meeting he had in Iraq with a bunch of tribal leaders in the mid-2000s:

"I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f#%& with me, I'll kill you all."

Sounds charismatic enough.

I agree! I’m 73 and first starting watching politics in the ‘56 election. I’m so glad I’ve lived to see this goofy race.

Sound like "Mad Dog" Perot. And will have the same results...a Clinton in the White House.

Sounds like the kind of scheme a bunch of Jeb supporters would think up. I presume they are hard at work rounding up the nearly 80,000 voter signatures they need by May 9th to get on the ballot.

Mattis received one write-in vote in a Military Times 2016 poll released last month.

That seems like a lot in Jeb and Noonan's offices.

I don’t know much about Mattis beyond what I read in the book “No True Glory”, but if that is indicative of him, I would vote for him in an instant.

His men seemed to respect him greatly. Any man that can command respect from US Marines sounds good to me.

That said, I have some reservations about some military men as politicians in much the same way I have reservations about brain surgeons as politicians.

The military man may be brilliant at warfare, and the brain surgeon may be able to safely get up to his knuckles in someone brain, but politics is a different thing. Not harder, but different.

Still, I would regard a skilled military man as possessing the qualities to run a country just fine. One has to look no further than George Washington.
