During a Wednesday speech on privacy at Kenyon College, FBI Director James Comey said he’s anxious enough about the prospect of covert surveillance that he places tape over his computer’s webcam.

Why put tape over the lens? Easy; why not?
Mr Comey, if you understand WHY you did that, and as FBI director you are doing nothing to stop the problem, you need to resign because of your abject ignorance and/or apathy.

I got a picture of me on an “FBI” screen accusing me of downloading free music and to pay a 300 dollar fine.
I had a wife beater T on at the time and it wasn’t an attractive picture :)
Made wife get the instructions on how to unfreeze screen.
300 dollars. Get out of here. I couldn’t care if the whole world saw that picture lol.
They could have put it on NBC news and I wouldn’t have paid :)

that said, can be a security breach, especially if you are unaware of the network traffic associated with your computer.

So do I. On several of my free game apps, Tetris and Trivia Crack to be specific, the game can only be played with my iPad turned vertically with the camera at the top. The game will not flip any other direction. I understand why the games can’t be played with the iPad horizontal, but why not with the camera on the bottom? Additionally, even though I mute the volume, certain adds turn the volume up. I don’t even touch the volume, but the volume shadow icon pops up and suddenly there’s sound.
This issue creates a market for a secure laptop with physical on/off switches for the camera, microphone and wireless adaptor.
Was it REALLY the FBI and not a scammer?
I’ve had those, too. Big time scam but it can be a pain. Before you do anything just go to POWER and hit RESTART.
OF COURSE it was a scammer. FBI would NEVER ask for money online.
They freeze your screen and threaten 5 billion years in prison if you don’t pay 300 bucks to the FBI lol.
not even a good front, but they make a fortune because people get scared seeing the FBI logo and they don’t want their pictures plastered all over facebook in a T shirt!

Looked the scheme up on anther laptop and it gave instructions on how to get rid of it.

It is very real. Very simple to turn on a web cam without the indicator light being turned on.
