Cold greeting for Cruz at GOP gala

Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz got the cold shoulder from a room of 800 Republicans at the New York City GOP gala Thursday night, receiving little interaction from the audience as he went through his usual stump speech.

Cruz, who followed speeches from rivals Donald Trump and John Kasich, began by making a joke at Trump’s expense that fell flat. “I haven’t built any buildings in New York City, but I have spent my entire life fighting to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights,” the Texas senator said, taking a shot at the GOP front-runner who, just moments before, spent the majority of his speech talking about his New York real estate successes.

Media at the scene reported guests walking around and talking during Cruz’s address.

When GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz said his rival Donald Trump represents “New York values” it was supposed to be an insult, even though he has stubbornly refused to admit why. When asked by Fox News host and native New Yorker Megyn Kelly what he meant by the remark on Tuesday, he laughed and said, “the rest of the country knows exactly what New York values are. I got to say, they’re not Iowa values and they’re not New Hampshire values.”

OK … but really though, what does that mean? It can’t mean that New York City and state are somehow more debauched or morally pliant than the rest of the country. For instance, the Empire State ranks in the bottom half of U.S. states when it comes to divorce rates, behind staunch red strongholds like Wyoming, Alabama and Arkansas. New York also recently led the nation in terms of reducing its crime rate.

Trump catches more flak every day than Cruz does in a month. It is just that nobody cares enough about Cruz to protest his small events.

Ted’s campaign said as recently as this morning that if Trump won with less than 50% in his ‘home state’ that Trump should drop out of the race. The campaign also said this morning that if Ted got even two delegates from NY, then Trump had ‘lost’ that primary.

I think it’s time for Ted to apply his rules to himself. Ted won his ‘home state’ with less than 50% and he lost delegates to Trump.

Ted needs to drop out and go back to trying to keep petty thieves in jail for 20 years over a stolen calculator.

Even they did not say point blank he said any such thing. Of course MSNBC wants Trump to win because they want Hillary in the Gen election, and they love trashing TRUE CONSERVATIVES.

when you cant hear the speaker you don’t just sit there, you talk. Most of those at \ Fox do not like Cruz. It was a good time to serve the food too. Cruz speech was never reviewed because no one heard it. Greta, Revera, Kelly but she treats them all the same. the Morning crew, lots of em.

Ted Cruz does not agree with New York's "New York values." While he's somewhat hard-pressed to define those values, he knows them when he sees them -- as did the audience at Thursday night's debate, he suggested, to chuckles. The upshot was that, "[n]ot a lot of conservatives come out of Manhattan," as he put it last night.

Happily for him, though, a lot of campaign money does.

We mapped all of the money Ted Cruz had raised in the city through the end of September -- a period during which he raised $15.2 million in individual contributions. Of that total, $1.40 out of every $100 came from the five boroughs of New York City.

Look, I appreciate your loyalty to your candidate, but let's be honest about the New York values thing.

The plan was Cruz would win Iowa, finish respectably in New Hampshire, and consolidate in South Carolina.

That would be the springboard to sweep on Super Tuesday. By the time the race got to New York, it wouldn't matter. It was meant as a cultural divide to rake in states in the Midwest, South, and Plains.

That's what the plan was. As we know, it didn't turn out that way.

Anyone who can read a calendar shouldn't be surprised that he now has to own that remark. There's no getting away from it.

He probably didn't mean it personally. But it's too late now. It's on his plate, and neither of the other candidates is going to give him a pass on it. You can rage about it being unfair all you want, but Ted gambled and lost.

You are absolutely right! I think some long time rep party people are so stuck to their conservative paradigm that they fail to see the bigger picture with Trump. He is a businessman who loves his country and will not be bought off. He will negotiate and not let the country keep getting ripped off. He will bring private industry efficiency to the broken government programs.

I don’t care if it’s not conservative enough for some people on abortion at this point, I care about the survival of our country and it’s people.

You know, the President can't do much about abortion anyway. Congress isn't going to pass any sort of bill for him to sign, and he's not going to invest political capital on it.

Abortion issues are settled in the Courts based on challenges to State law.

The real issue is Court Appointments. Trump is the only candidate who has actually Named candidates that he thought would be good appointments. I don't know anything about them, but since there hasn't been an instant hue-and-cry from the pro-lifers, I guess they're OK.

It was the perfect move for Trump tonight, not even getting into politics till half way through his speech. Warmed the crowd up with just good old stories, but the stories also showed how he can get things done where the government can’t. It was a genius move thay worked out great. By the time he started talking politics the crowd was already engaged and clapping and cheering for him...nothing brings people together like a good story from their home town.

lol ....May have just been those NYC values, but more likely was the need to walk around to wake up after Kasich put them in a drowsy stupor.

I saw most of the Cruz speech on FNC and he received a lot of applause on various points he made. Cruz came across as much more “Presidential” than the other two. ...Then, the audio went haywire and it was difficult to hear clearly.

FNC cut away when it was time for Hannity. Sean’s program was one of the worst I’ve ever watched, so after about ten minutes I jumped to CNN and watched the fun between Hillary and Sanders.

Behind enemy lines... Cruz mans up and goes for it. In similar situations, The Donald has gone MIA. That’s why President Cruz will be the better choice.

Hey, dude, how bout passing the dutchie over here. Cruz mans up is a joke, right? He spends his life in dark back rooms, buying delegates and rigging cauci. Why did you know that for $35 you can be a Cruz "Top Duty Delegate." Dang, that's some serious stuff!

Anyway, you hang in there, I think this coming week and the next are the big turning point for Cruz. Trump will probably have to concede to Cruz on the 26th.

This was said at the time that Cruz was not a conservative but had New York values Something Trump had referred to one time earlier, It was brought up during the first debate, and Trump was ready for that—he went off on Cruz and shifted over to 9-ll and how wonderful the New Yorkers were. Cruz applauded his remarks and knew he had one over on Cruz. They never gave Cruz time to answer they moved on. When Cruz was ask later, he said he never meant the people and thought that was that. Trump hung on to this. When Trump brought it up in NY people remembered it but not the specific details so trump fill in his own ideas true or not. He said C told him he hated NYers, and hCruz had “hate in his eyes”
