One other thought. It is also legal for a parent to spank a child in Kansas, largely because of several appellate decisions in which my former law partner represented the spanker. Oddly enough, he was a very liberal anti war nut job. For years I had the switch that was an exhibit in my pantry and would remind my kids that their Uncle ___ had made it legal to spank. I did spank my younger son once. We read a book first. I hit once and the stupid plastic ruler broke. This was after we figured out that he didn’t care if we sent him to his room (I’m talking no coming out except to go to the bathroom for a full 24 hours).

Our daughter was the problem but we didn’t spank her. Once I slapped her and she slugged me. But earlier we started removing privileges like no phone, no walking to school, eventually nothing in the room but a mattress and one change of clothes and then we removed the door. Sad. But still my MIL said we were the reason she went off the rails.

Got my knuckles rapped a few times.
The only physical discipline that I remain resentful of was the sucker punch to the gut.
That was the action of a bully with a dash of sadism, not appropriate behavior for Father T****, the principal.

The reason for the punch?
I had suggested to the police officer who addressed an assembly on the dangers of cannabis,
that alcohol was a worse drug.

Left the school shortly thereafter and wasn’t too enamored with the Church either.
Continued my education by other means.

When I look back to my time as a high school student in New Zealand in 1984 and teachers there were allowed to cane students at the time, it may have been harsh and old fashioned compared to the United States and Canada by that time. However, I think that it kept us (boys in particular) that good deal more honest.

I had a technical drawing teacher who had been in the army years ago and was also a very nice, very personable fellow, but make no mistake, he did not take any $%^&ing nonsense from us and would flog students who made him sufficiently angry.

The absences are a capital offense because it impacts Federal matching funds.

Otherwise, administrators care nothing about discipline.

Though tempted to sarcastically use “beat”, because that is the emotional term libs no doubt are obligated to use, I shall use “spank” because that is the only accurate term here.

My great grand father spanked my grand father, and my grand father never killed anyone.
My grand father spanked my father, and my father never killed anyone.
My father (and mother also) spanked my sister, my brother and me. Neither my siblings nor I have ever been arrested for any thing.

My wife and I spanked both our sons, and our daughter. None of my children have ever been arrested for any thing.

All my children’s children have been spanked.

And, what terrible creatures have been hoisted upon society?

My sister was class Valedictorian.
My brother was class Salutatorian.
A nephew was class Salutatorian.
A niece was class Salutatorian.
A great nephew was class Valedictorian
One nephew graduated from Annapolis, and one graduated from West Point.
Three grand sons made high school all-state in football. Oldest grand son is a lawyer, and 2 others are finishing their BS degree. Others still in elementary, middle, or high school, and are “A” honors students with sports achievements. Home coming queen, cheerleader Captain, President of 400 member FFA chapter, etc.

On my mother’s side, which includes much spanking, there were/are 6 doctors, including my uncle which delivered me, 2 Generals, and 1 Judge.

If observing any of our frequent family get togethers you will observe many hugs and hear the sounds of “yes sir”, “no sir”. All well adjusted and popular members of the community and church. One son elected to political office.

I have yet to see the dire consequences of spanking. All the above group of people experienced both giving and receiving spanks. Seems to me spanking must have worked.

By the way, I received much more spanking than both my sister and my brother combined. I needed it. I hate to think what I might have become without it. In case you might wonder, I loved both my parents, and wept when they passed. I know libs will never be able to comprehend any of this.

I used to volunteer in the neighbourhood public school about 25 years ago. It was a country school, but they bused in most of the kids from the surrounding surveys, as the school population was low.

Let me tell you, more than half of those kids needs a good paddling. I can’t help but think that the teachers today wish for the good ol’ days when kids had respect and manners. Well, respect and manners sometimes were the result of a good spanking when it was required.

If the mother determined that a punishment was just, she should have told the kid to stand still and take it like a big boy. Instead, she filmed the tantrum. Probably had facebook stardom in mind. That part is working out for her, for now.

If the punishment was not just, the article says she has a right to deny it. But she herself was truant so many times, she is letting her son take the fall for her.

The article never says what the child did to deserve the punishment. I sincerely hope it was not for being late or absent, over which the child has no control. Nor does he seem to be getting much support at home in terms of correct behavior.

This mother needs court-ordered parenting classes — as if the state could actually give any effective education. Churches really, really need to address the cultural shortfall caused by unmarrieds raising children, and children being raised by media.

Her son has had 18 unexcused absences this school year and she was once arrested for his truancy.

Parenting seems to be a serious issue in this family. I would not want to be the teacher of that child.

No teacher of administrator should be dishing out physical punishment.

That said, they should be able to expel the kid.

“Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz told IE: “There is really no data to say that corporal punishment effects positive change.”

Another fool checking in.

The video does NOT show the brat being paddled. Moreover, if it was done, it was only to be a single swat, as the Asst. Principal said. And I doubt if it was done, it would have been painful. You gotta watch the video.

“...19 states allow corporal punishment in schools. They are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming.”

Good for them.

A very interesting tally of the stats for discipline for this Jasper County Primary School.

I got the paddle exactly twice in my school years. In the first grade for throwing rocks (in my defense, I’d just been shoved down by two bullies, but the teacher didn’t see that - I was just trying to defend myself). The second was for carrying a throwing star in junior high school (hey, it was the thing to do in the ‘80s). Well, okay, not so much for carrying it, but for sticking it into the ceiling tiles. Both were well deserved. Both were well remembered.
