Winners or Whiners?
Real Clear Politics ^ | April 19, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

If there is one pattern that is emerging from this year's political campaigns, it is that rhetoric beats reality -- in both parties.

The biggest surprise among the Democrats is Bernie Sanders, and among the Republicans is Donald Trump. Although they are each seeking to be put in charge of the nation's government, does anyone know -- or care -- what their actual track record in government has been?

Trump of course has no track record at all in government. If Sanders has anything to show for his many years in Congress, no one seems to know what it is. But both are great at rhetoric.

Hillary Clinton's biggest selling point is that she has lots of "experience" in government, having been a Senator and a Secretary of State. But what she actually accomplished in those roles gets remarkably little attention.

Au contraire. Well, might depend on the meaning of 'in', as in the other side of power-wielding. He certainly contributed to a fair number of government politicians. To be fair, he contributed to many republicans, as well as democrats. If you consider folks like McPain, Specter and Christ republicans. Then there is the 'Rat Sinatorial Campaign Committee...

Reid, Schumer, Rangal, ....

This is a war for the heart and soul of America.

Those who want to restore and preserve the Republic versus the thieves, looters and moochers.

On the one side you have those who will vote for Donald Trump.

On the other side you have the democrat and republican parties, almost every politician in federal office and most in state office, the entrenched federal bureaucracies, the labor unions, the greedheads, moochers, whiners, Islamists, sexual perverts, and America haters.

Oh, Lord, are you serious? Did you read that before you posted it?

We are supposed to be the party of thinking people, but I think that you have inadvertently nailed Donald s support, gut, or substitute another word, emotion.

We most certainty would not want to use logic or reason to help in our selection of the chief executive of the US. sarc.

Also, don’t think that the Donald enjoys such overwhelming support. He hasn’t even won a majority in a primary. I’ll give you that his supporters are enthusiastic, but, that doesn’t translate to electoral successes.

Trump cannot be understood using one’s head. Logicians are blind to his appeal.

Logic and reason are great for thinking, but they lack the one thing that is absolutely imperative for business success and real leadership.

Trump is a crony capitalist and carnival barker. Appealing to the gut not the mind is the same thing Hitler did. Not sure that is the best model. Party corruption notwithstanding.

He is a brilliant whiner however. As this article illustrates so clearly:

People buy with their gut, after considering facts and reason.

Instinct/gut incorporates the mind...it doesn't exclude it.

Amazing. Now I understand that despite perception in the MSM Trump is actually humble. Words can be misinterpreted and spun but anyone with eyes can see these buildings are superb. What could Trump do with America’s aging infrastructure. I can’t wait to find out!

I think the real “whiners” are people that can’t win at the ballot box and still try to slime their way to what they want, in broad daylight in front of everyone. As if it’s going to be forgotten.

Logic and reason are great for thinking, but they lack the one thing that is absolutely imperative for business success and real leadership.

Logic and reason are the foundation of conservatism. It's thinking through the cause and effect of policy, rather than going with what makes us feel good. "Gut," as you put it, is the foundation of liberalism. So long as the liberal feels good as a result of policy, then the policy is good. The actual effects of the policy are irrelevant. But you just inadvertently hit upon in a nutshell why real conservatives don't support Trump at this point. There is still an option that represents logic and reason, analysis of cause and effect, who's policies are guided by outcome, not gut feelings.

I'm afraid you are wrong. These pictures are a paean to what a man can accomplish with freedom & liberty. They demonstrate how the mind can soar and accomplish its dreams. Freedom, Liberty, Discipline & Vision. That is the best of American in my book.

The Constitution sets the stage but men must do the rest.

Donald Trump defends his position on the constitution as "set in stone" and hits Ted Cruz for claiming to be a "constitutionalist" but being unwilling to practice the way the constitution was set up and "supposed to work." From Trump's interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper that aired Mar 9, 2016: Trump: "I See The Constitution As Set In Stone"

Nonsense.

Liberalism is based on emotion, not gut.

Instinct or gut incorporates reason, logic, wisdom, experience, morality, vision, even faith and an indefinable quality which balances them all to make a decision.

Are you saying that Jim Robinson isn't a real conservative?

Hmmm can't make a coherent argument, so you respond with, "I'm telling."

I've seen Jim state that he would support either candidate, but prefers Trump. I'm sure he has his reasons. If he's banning Cruz supporters then so be it. Logic and reason are the foundation of conservatism, period. Trump does not embody that ideals.

I'm not telling. I didn't ping him.

It was an honest question.

You apparently don't know what gut instinct is.

Conservatism also includes faith in God. How do you explain faith with logic and reason?

I think you mean well, but are depressed because your candidate is a luzer.

You're confused and accuse those not supporting sCruz of not being conservatives.

Weak.

Your rhetoric is great but there is no such candidate, only a bought and sold chameleon, whose disrespect for Americans is clearly on display, as he uses slight of hand to hide his Establishment ties & Globalism. Spend a little time watching Cruz speak on his bills to double legal Immigration and increase H1b Visas 500% when Americans are unemployed by the millions.

To suggest that logic and reason are not on display in Trump's resume of buildings is just partisan posturing. You are confusing passion for America and a vision of what she once was and could be again with Liberal feel good attitudes.

Feel good people don't build buildings; they wax eloquent and speak at rallies. They also don't spend $100 million of their own money to run for President, crisscrossing the country and speaking without a teleprompter, 2 & 3 times a day to thousands of people, for months at a time. They don't eschew donation to defray the costs so that they will be able to operate in America's interests rather than be bought for special interests.
Tell it to Sweeney.

Jim has his reasons, but the rest of Trump's supporters are "liberals."

Yep, you would be a Cruz supporter. Obsequious to the core.

The bane of our existence will be when those who spell it as bain realize we will inherit Hillary as our president, a new supreme court justice or two will be named by her, who will be bedwetting lefties and we will all suffer.

I'm still a William F. Buckley, old school conservative who will vote for the most conservative guy out there, but don't believe Trump will do much in a general election. I'll say he might get 180 electoral votes if nominated.

What has become true, is that after 18 years of visiting this site, the vitriol is far more prevalent. Nobody can express an opinion without the faceless internet minions feeling free to bash you no matter how logical or reasonable your comments are worded. People can disagree without adding all the derogatory comments.

AMDG indeed, even though I went to a CSC school.
