I have supported Cruz...and I know he (like any Presidential candidate) is convinced of the absolute need for his nomination.
But he needs to start stepping back and considering what is best for this nation now that he is being mathematically eliminated in terms of a path to the nomination before the convention.
This year, an ugly convention fight will be what leads to a Hillary victory. It will split the party and disenfranchise voters.
What is needed is a voice of unity and someone who can repair the party and help support and promote a winning ticket.
That ticket is, in all probability going to be Donald Trump.
As I say, I am a Cruz supporter...yet I can see this as plain as the nose on my face.
Cruz can help bring the party together if he will face reality, set aside his pride, bury the war hatchet, and come together soon (perhaps after Indiana) and throw in with Trump.
That will:
1) Unite the party as much as is possible in this cucly.
2) deliver a death blow to the GOPe.
3) Create a ticket that can win this race against Hillary.
All of that is what is best for this nation.
We absolutely cannot afford a 3rd Obama term (or worse), and we absolutely need to deliver a stunning blow to the GOPe.
It is my sincere prayer that Cruz will be able to do this.
As a patriotic American, I thank you for your intelligent, measured post. I join in your prayer. Cruz needs to reawaken his better nature, and stop the obsession tending towards personal destruction—both his own and Trump’s.

Absolutely.
...now, if there aren’t too many bridges got torched over the past couple of months and we can get back to having discussions around here....
That’s the perfect attitude. Put America First!
Cruz needs to be constructive rather than destructive for America.
With that in mind, how could I trust Ted to ever put America’s interest above his own. He is not a team player.
Many here hope for an alliance. I question whether Trump is capable of managing such a thing. Should Cruz step aside, and Trump simply spikes the ball without some real acknowledgement of what Cruz and his supporters hold dear, then no real alliance is going to happen.
But, perhaps he will amaze me as he has done over and over. Perhaps a leopard can change his spots.
The "mad as hell..." theme will not translate into November victory. Neither will the "war on politicians".
And the deeply held principle, that more government (making better deals) is NOT the solution needed, will not simply vanish. (This is the bottom line I get from Trump.) He could use Cruz to carry that message, and reveal a plan of action with concrete steps to begin to move in that direction.
Not holding my breath.
Cruz is young enough that he should recognize it's not yet his time and that he can now choose to either look to the future or dig in his heels and damage not only his party but also his own political future. The time to do that is this month and whether he does so before or after next Tuesday is his choice. But if continues to try to be a "disunifier" it will be impossible for him to reunify the party even if he manages to gain the nomination. That's the only path Hillary has to victory. Something for Mr. Cruz to consider carefully.
Thank you, Jeff, for your wise and heartfelt post. You clearly recognize that the enemy of this country is not someone that shares 70% of the positions that you have, but someone that shares under 10% of your views. You understand that there’s a point to fighting the good fight, but that there is also a time to throw in the towel.
We here at FR are a mirror of the Republican/conservative electorate. The incredible hostility that this primary season has generated can ONLY help the Dems, and if any of them are elected to the Presidency (even Biden or Fauxcahontas, if Shrillary is prosecuted or drops dead). Your post, if it causes a lot of Cruz supporters to reassess the situation in light of the NATIONAL interest, could be the start of the healing process - and I earnestly hope that it will be exactly that.
I would also add that the Trump supporters (of which I am one) will also handle this victory with some degree of magnanimity. Offering one’s hand to those who fought you and lost is a much better policy than spitting in their face. BOTH sides need to swallow their pride a bit, and BOTH sides need to look at what is best for their nation and the future that they wish to leave to their children and grandchildren. Now IS the time to come together...thanks, again, for beginning the process (at least here on FR).
The only thing to keep Hillary out of the White House at this point is the FBI arresting her.
Im not holding my breath.
You’re right, he does need to step back. And he had best do it now.
Jeff, I believe the GOP has basically fractured into two camp’s: The American Sovereigns camp & The New World Order Globalists camp. I think we need to face the reality that these two camp’s can never & WILL NEVER become United. At some point in this process they will be split forevermore...IMHO.
