COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The slayings of eight family members in rural southern Ohio "was a pre-planned execution" and the investigation will be lengthy, the state's attorney general told reporters Sunday...
Authorities said it was clear that the Rhoden family was targeted, and Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader said he's told relatives to be armed.
Reader said he did not believe there was a safety issue for other residents. But "If you are fearful, arm yourself," he said.
Authorities have been scrambling to determine who targeted the clan and why. Investigators have interviewed between 50 and 60 people in hopes of finding leads, and a team 38 people is combing wooded areas around the shooting scenes to ensure no evidence was missed, Reader said.
Authorities found marijuana-growing operations at three of the four locations of the shootings, but neither DeWine nor Reader elaborated on what, if any, role they had in the deaths.
Reader said in his 20 years in law enforcement, he never interacted with the family "in a criminal nature."
"This was very methodical. This was well planned. This was not something that just happened," said Reader, saying most victims were targeted while they were sleeping.

I would be pleased if the term “execution” were reserved for those who are put to death following a trial of duly constituted court. Everything else is just plain “murder”.
It says elaborated, it didn’t say they didn’t believe that it was the motivation, because obviously they do, and it was.
When I heard the victims were all from one family, I immediately thought this sounds like an episode of Justified.
Then the marijuana angle came out. Wow!

There was a family murdered here in Chicago too. Similar. No known history but a hint of drugs.

From the aerial photos, it appears that perhaps in addition to the pot growing operation, there may have been cockfighting and dogfighting going on, so who knows what unsavory elements they have ties to. I wonder if perhaps they owed someone a lot of money or double crossed the wrong person.

The only mitigating factor is that the perp did not kill or even physically harm three little ones who were present for the murders of their family. Their lives will be forever diminished, however. The perp's life should be forfeit upon conviction.
Not that I’m defending mass murder, but it’s starting to sound like these guys should have had a better understanding of how much security they needed if they were going to take on established gangs, cartels, and dog fighters.
But Raylan would have straightened it all out. It’s just across the border from his district, but he didn’t mind a nice drive.
This crime is so entwined with drugs, open borders and politically charged issues, we may never be allowed to know what happened.
“Justified” was just a show, but if one watched it from the beginning to the end, it really was very realistic....and Harlan County ain’t that far from Pike county.
if its drug cartel involved, all it took is for one family member to cross them for them to make an example...
