Hewitt: Doubtful that Trump reaches 1,237 delegates, unless a ‘political asteroid’ hits California

Radio host Hugh Hewitt joined MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki Thursday morning to discuss what many have already predicted will happen, including Hewitt, when the GOP descends into Cleveland for their convention in July: a contested convention. Not only that, but Hewitt said that there’s no way Donald Trump gets to 1,237 delegates, even with the rosiest of scenarios for the slate of northeastern primaries next Tuesday, Indiana in May, and California in June. There are 15 states left in the GOP primary season.

Hewitt said he went state-by-state and gave Trump very generous amounts of delegates in his projection, including 51 of 59 of Indiana’s slate. Trump needs 392 delegates to clinch the nomination. Hewitt said Trump probably wouldn’t get any delegates in Nebraska, South Dakota, or Montana, which means in 14 out of the 15 contests left, the billionaire would only get 273–and it’s doubtful he will do well in California, in which he would need to win 119 of the 172 delegates in that contest. He added that it’s doubtful that Trump would get any more than 100 by the time Cruz, Trump, and Kasich duke it out in The Golden State, unless a “political asteroid” occurs.

The GOPe and its media lackeys keep predicting Trump’s doom and he keeps surviving. What will Hugh Hewitt be saying when Trump wins almost every Republican delegate in California?

Hewitt continues to be a GOPe blow hard. Trump may get to 1237 but if he falls short he will still get the nomination because he has won more votes by millions, more states and more delegates. There is no one who would replace Trump and expect to win in the general election.

If NY had been off by even a dozen delegates, I would have been concerned. But he took almost all of them.

I think he is going to do very well in CA.

Tump’s leading in every CD by 5-15 points in CA.

That’s impossible.
I was told on FR that Cruz is “wildly popular” in California.

The only people he’s wildly popular with his Hillery voting Democrats. They think he would the easiest candidate to beat since Bob Dole.

Hewitt is almost always wrong.

I remember first time I heard him in 1998 he was guest hosting Live From LA on KKLA the day before the gubernatorial election.

He kept saying Dan Lungren has it in the bag, will win easily over Gray Davis.

When is his show on? His flag ship station in LA dropped him.

Did he move to DC?

“Hewitt is hard to understand...”

Hugh’s just blowing BS to keep the troops high. He plays loose with the facts. I’ve got Trump at 283 without CA. He doesn’t talk about the 54 unbound in PA., where at least 1/2 have already pledged to Trump or the winner of the CD.

McCain got 158 in CA with 42% of the vote. So he conveniently leaves out 82 delegates in his math.

If I remember correctly, Hewitt’s law firm represented or represents a national home builders association. I tried a google search and didn’t get any hits.

Now why might a guy getting money from home builders be interested in cheap construction labor?

“the pressure that will mount for Cruz and Kasich to get out of the race after Tuesday”

Pressure from who?

Who is going to pressure Cruz or Kasich to get out of the race?

I don’t understand how Hewitt gains at this point in the race by making ridiculous predictions like this one... He is either completely delusional or has some hidden reason to be saying such things.. I think even bill kristol and George Will and the other dead-enders even realize at this point the election is over...

I think he’s still in CA, but switched stations. They are both in the Salem Network. He’s on in the morning now.

Hewitt seems to be discounting the pressure that will mount for Cruz and Kasich to get out of the race after Tuesday. Cruz will come in third in several of those races.

2 points come to mind:

1. Assume that you're playing football. There's 45 seconds left and you're losing by 3. Do you walk off the field and give up if you have a chance to take it to overtime? Or do you fight to the end?

2. Northeastern Republicans are really moderate Democrats (Northeaster Democrats are Social Justice Workers). Do you really want that part of the country running your life any more than they already do? Shouldn't the people in the remaining states have a say?
