It would be gradual. Part of the change would have to be to drop the regulations that stop individual and small companies from thriving and growing. You might well be underestimating how quickly folks will respond if the opportunity to be self-sufficient emerges.

Another part has to happen in the schools. Over half the population doesn't belong in college. In high school, they could be learning hands-on and practical things that prepare them to have jobs and skills when they graduate.

One year I looked for made in America toys for Christmas. I found a few things, but they were expensive and not what my grandkids wanted.
