BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday criticized U.S. Republican front-runner Donald Trump for a speech in which he said it would be "America first" if he were elected president.

Trump said on Wednesday that if elected, his foreign policy would leave European and Asian allies of the U.S. fending for themselves if they did not pay more for U.S. defense measures.

"I can only hope that the election campaign in the USA does not lack the perception of reality," Steinmeier said.

"The world's security architecture has changed and it is no longer based on two pillars alone. It cannot be conducted unilaterally," he said, referring to Trump's "America first" message.

Steinmeier said international conflicts could only be solved nowadays if heavyweights like the United States and Russia and others joined forces.

He’s done more as a candidate for America than most sitting presidents do. The difference is they do far more harm.

Note to Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier: “Take a long walk up a short pier!”

Meanwhile Americans gleefully run around in BMW’s Volkswagens, and Mercedes, while Germany tells the rest of Europe what to do and we pay the bills. German soldiers don’t fight, they are only “peacekeepers”.

Enlightened self-interest.

Without a strong and assertive America, not even second place is very much.

America was once first because America strived to hold that position. Right now, that position has gone into free fall, and we may find ourselves somewhere below Bangladesh or Zimbabwe.

I predict that the closer we get to the election day, the more you will hear whining from foreign govs.....

I wonder if the inspiration of Trump will encourage real Europeans to do whatever it takes to get rid of the EU. Their leaders keep backstabbing citizens.

I predict that the closer we get to election day, the more you will hear whining from foreign governments over Trumps vision.

Good. It will bring in more votes for Trump.

These deadbeats do not want Trump taking them off the gravy wagon.

This is true everywhere from "K" Street to Wall Street to Shanghai to Tokyo to anywhere that government financed leeches congregate.

Trump better be ready for the onslaught.-
....................................................
Trump will be defending the Constitution, not telling countries like Egypt not to pay any attention to the U.S. Constitution and certainly not to model their Constitution after ours like Hillary did. Trump is an American first and I trust him to put America first.

Imagine in 1946 someone telling you that the German FM would criticize a U.S. Presidential candidate for saying “America First”.

Woulda been laughable.

Would hae been cause for a Lynching.

STFU, Walt.

How about you tend to the reality that rape gangs are running the streets of German cities without cops bothering them because they don't want to offend Muzzies.

We'll tend to the reality that if Germany isn't willing to defend itself then Germans must not need to be defended.

And as an aside, I haven’t noticed a lot of military threats to Germany lately, unless you include ISIS, who they freely invite in.

The entire present German government should be arrested and sentenced to hard labor in work camps . They are good at that

Germany has been defending itself on the American dime since the cold war.

In fact, WE PAID for the privilege of being there in addition to paying for the defense provided. Amazing.

We paid maneuver damage, we paid salaries of required German laborers, we paid rent.

I would love to see Trump, as president, tell the UN to either pay it’s own way here in America, or just leave......
