Trump's 'America first' speech alarms U.S. allies

Donald Trump's first major foreign policy address alarmed American allies, who view the Republican front runner's repeated invocation of an "America first" agenda as a threat to retreat from the world.

While most governments were careful not to comment publicly on a speech by a U.S. presidential candidate, Germany's foreign minister veered from that protocol to express concern at Trump's wording.

"I can only hope that the election campaign in the USA does not lack the perception of reality," Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

"The world's security architecture has changed and it is no longer based on two pillars alone. It cannot be conducted unilaterally," he said of foreign policy in a post-Cold War world. "No American president can get round this change in the international security architecture.... 'America first' is actually no answer to that."

NATO no longer serves a useful purpose for us or for the world. Time to scrap it and go with a new construct.

One where the Euros defend themselves.

More Pat Buchanan isolationism..... Let everything go to “hell in a handbasket” and just don’t worry about it. It’s like owning a piece of property and not maintaining it for about 20 years, and thinking that you saved money long term.

Herr Steinmeier, you have your own reality to worry about, a reality that threatens your nation and Europe and for which your own Chancellor is completely out of touch with.

There shouldn’t even be an “international security architecture”

I support this philosophy not only because American taxpayers have been paying for the defense of Euro countries but also because of the effect this has had: Eurosnots use those "savings" for their "social contracts" and their disdain of capitalism.

Very soon each EU country will recognize the need for a standing military and where is the money for THAT coming from?

Unless they want to see Vlad up front and personal they better start turning butter into steel.

The world media.....! What can we say? Our media is afraid
Donald Trump doesn’t know enough about world affairs, yet he has hotels, golf courses and whatever in many countries.

Our “allies” are afraid he’s TOO AMERICAN! and will make them pay their fair share. OH ME.

We’ve allowed our white hut employee and our elite employees kiss “our allies” grits for too many years.

IT’S FINALLY TIME for WE AMERICANS put our country FIRST !!

More Pat Buchanan isolationism...

What isolationism?

Show me where Trump even hinted about isolationism.

I remember Dominic DeVillepan of France, telling us about how we live in a multipolar world when we were denied airspace when attacking Iraq. In essence, he was saying that the Europeans, not the US, should decide which wars Americans should die in.

That was when I knew NATO was over.

Actually, this points up how truly important a Trump victory is; not only to get America back on the right path, but to wake up the West and its former allies, in general.

The war on patriotism, carried out by people high in our political structure since the late 1940s, has also been reflected in a State Department that has discouraged patriotism among the Western nations, in general. The idiotic EU--sold for the benefits of a monetary & commercial alliance--that has actually warred on the cultural heritages of the member States; was basically a promotion of our State Department. If reason returns, there is no reason that the EU could not be modified into something that provides economic benefits, while respecting the once vibrant & distinct cultures achieved over the centuries.
