I was criticized once,by a hardcore lib,for criticisng Menino’s speech because he was raised as a “working class Bostonian”
I told her I was raised as a working class Bostonian and berated her for implying that working class folks did not have a good command of the English language.
That shut her up.

I grew up in Newton but both my parents grew up in the slums of Southie in the 20's and 30's.Neither of them had the slightest accent and although neither of them could go to college (far too poor) my Dad rose to the top of a huge multinational and my Mom routinely did the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in pen.
