Johns Hopkins Psychiatrist: Transgender is ‘Mental Disorder;' Sex Change ‘Biologically Impossible’
CNS News ^ | 6/2/15 | Michael W. Chapman

Posted on 05/02/2016 10:27:03 PM PDT by Mr. Mojo

(CNSNews.com) -- Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, said that transgenderism is a “mental disorder” that merits treatment, that sex change is “biologically impossible,” and that people who promote sexual reassignment surgery are collaborating with and promoting a mental disorder.

Dr. McHugh, the author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, made his remarks in a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, where he explained that transgender surgery is not the solution for people who suffer a “disorder of ‘assumption’” – the notion that their maleness or femaleness is different than what nature assigned to them biologically.

He also reported on a new study showing that the suicide rate among transgendered people who had reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender people. Dr. McHugh further noted studies from Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic of children who had expressed transgender feelings but for whom, over time, 70%-80% “spontaneously lost those feelings.”

While the Obama administration, Hollywood, and major media such as Time magazine promote transgenderism as normal, said Dr. McHugh, these “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.”

“This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken – it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes.”

The transgendered person’s disorder, said Dr. McHugh, is in the person’s “assumption” that they are different than the physical reality of their body, their maleness or femaleness, as assigned by nature. It is a disorder similar to a “dangerously thin” person suffering anorexia who looks in the mirror and thinks they are “overweight,” said McHugh.

This assumption, that one’s gender is only in the mind regardless of anatomical reality, has led some transgendered people to push for social acceptance and affirmation of their own subjective “personal truth,” said Dr. McHugh. As a result, some states – California, New Jersey, and Massachusetts – have passed laws barring psychiatrists, “even with parental permission, from striving to restore natural gender feelings to a transgender minor,” he said.

The pro-transgender advocates do not want to know, said McHugh, that studies show between 70% and 80% of children who express transgender feelings “spontaneously lose those feelings” over time. Also, for those who had sexual reassignment surgery, most said they were “satisfied” with the operation “but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery.”

And so at Hopkins we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a ‘satisfied’ but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs,” said Dr. McHugh.

The former Johns Hopkins chief of psychiatry also warned against enabling or encouraging certain subgroups of the transgendered, such as young people “susceptible to suggestion from ‘everything is normal’ sex education,” and the schools’ “diversity counselors” who, like “cult leaders,” may “encourage these young people to distance themselves from their families and offer advice on rebutting arguments against having transgender surgery.”

Dr. McHugh also reported that there are “misguided doctors” who, working with very young children who seem to imitate the opposite sex, will administer “puberty-delaying hormones to render later sex-change surgeries less onerous – even though the drugs stunt the children’s growth and risk causing sterility.”

Such action comes “close to child abuse,” said Dr. McHugh, given that close to 80% of those kids will “abandon their confusion and grow naturally into adult life if untreated ….”

“’Sex change’ is biologically impossible,” said McHugh. “People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women. Claiming that this is civil-rights matter and encouraging surgical intervention is in reality to collaborate with and promote a mental disorder.”

Two different things. The current phenomenon is not someone born with mixed up chromosomes. It is an infatuation with being the opposite sex. The transgender craze is not a sober, scientific examination of who someone is biologically because there is no question with these people.

The current insanity is, like the homosexuality fad, based on accepting and living a lie to the destruction of the individual in question. No matter how much effort is put into muddying the water, the truth remains. All you will accomplish is preventing the people who need it most from seeing it.

It is hard to believe that this had been considered conventional wisdom at one time. Now, just saying this aloud carries serious repercussions.

What a brave man!

Insane people demanding that we accept that they aren’t insane and for us to pretend their behaviour is not insane.

Every major personality disorder includes “gender confusion” as a marker for the disorder.

Gender confusion used to be called homosexual.

Your slight of hand is clever, but decieving.

Having sex with little boys and young girls is a fact of life, doesn’t mean it is healthy, or that we should tolerate them affecting our children.

Transgendered people have been destroyed by their parents or primary care givers when they were young.

“Two different things. The current phenomenon is not someone born with mixed up chromosomes. It is an infatuation with being the opposite sex. The transgender craze is not a sober, scientific examination of who someone is biologically because there is no question with these people.”

The subject matter was the claim that ALL transgendered people must be mentally ill and there is a psychiatrist who is going to give them the fig leaf of an excuse to say so in utter disregard of the hard science of human biology. That is making to the accusations that all men are sexually perverted animals who cannot be trusted around women or making an accusation that ALL women are hussies who cannot be trusted not to steal another woman’s husband. Yes, recent medical and social circumstances have made it possible for more people to behave irresponsibly, and it does represent a problem to society. Nonetheless, that is no excuse to act with willful ignorance and inhumanity in defiance of the hard facts of human biology and good common sense with respect to people who do exist in a transgendered state with or without related psychoses or neuroses due to biological origins they did not cause.

“The current insanity is, like the homosexuality fad, based on accepting and living a lie to the destruction of the individual in question.”

Certainly that is true for some or even many people, but the remarks being made in FR maliciously and in some cases ignorantly seek to persecute all transgendered people with no regard whatsoever for their circumstances or their lack of mental illness. Indeed, the medical community routinely performs genital surgery for the purpose of sexual reassignment on newborn babies with ambiguous genitalia citing the medical condition as a “social emergency”, meaning there was no medical emergency requiring such drastic surgery. This “social emergency” surgery that has been going on for more than a century has also been described as another form of “insanity” as well.

“No matter how much effort is put into muddying the water, the truth remains. All you will accomplish is preventing the people who need it most from seeing it.”

How is denying biological reality, preforming sexual reassignment surgeries on newborn babies contrary to their mental characteristics, and falsely describing all intersexed people as mentally ill earn the respect and trust of people who permit themselves to be falsely convinced they are transsexuals? How much credence do you give to people who have a habit of telling lies, humiliating people without proper cause, and saying you can only be a mentally ill person if you don’t go along with any and every lie they make? How well would you listen to such people?

“Your slight of hand is clever, but decieving.”

There is no sleight of hand or deception at all. Students of psychiatry and psychology are often given the case to study where a professor urged his students to use the summer break to conduct a scientific experiment. They were asked to commit themselves as a patient in a mental institution during the break period, checkout at the end of the break, and return to the next semester class to report their observational results. Unfortunately, one of the students failed show up the next semester. After some time went by, the professor set out to find the missing student. This missing student was found in a mental institution, who refused to discharge the student until they were legally forced to do so. It turns out the ‘well respected” psychiatrists at this mental institution had a bad habit of diagnosing normal persons as having mental illnesses that helped their levels of income and purported professional reputations. This case is one of many that has caused many scientists in the physical sciences to regard significant areas of psychiatry as a soft science, social science, and perhaps as a voodoo science along with many of their practitioners. You will also find many psychiatric patients who come away from encounters with psychiatrists with the impression the psychiatrists are in greater need of therapy of mental illness than themselves. So, just because you can find a one or a few people in white lab coats with a university degree and comments reinforcing your preconceived beliefs does not make them infallible or even close to being right about the subject, pro or con.

“Having sex with little boys and young girls is a fact of life, doesn’t mean it is healthy, or that we should tolerate them affecting our children.”

I don’t know of anyone who said it did.

“Transgendered people have been destroyed by their parents or primary care givers when they were young.”

That is another myth. There are millions of transgendered people who have lived full and otherwise relatively normal lives without manifestations of mental illness markedly different from the cisgendered population. You are just oblivious and hostile to their existence.

“It is hard to believe that this had been considered conventional wisdom at one time.”

It was also conventional wisdom that a woman who was bound and thrown into the pond would float if she were a witch and would sink and drown if she were innocent of being a witch. It was also conventional wisdom that witches were responsible for laying crops waste with unseasonably cold weather, and the number of witch trials and witch burnings reached a peak as the conventional wisdom caused the community to seek out more witches to burn.

Close? I'd say it defines it.

“Every major personality disorder includes “gender confusion” as a marker for the disorder.”

Given the fact that every person has neuroses and every person has a mix of masculine and feminine gender characteristics, how could it be any different?

“Gender confusion used to be called homosexual.”

That is yet another widespread myth. Various sex role studies such s the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) have demonstrated there is a scale of human sex role behavior with androgynous behavior at the center point of the scale, ultra femininity at the extreme end of the scale, and ultra masculinity at the opposite extreme end of the scale. When studying homosexuals in relation to this scale of androgyny, femininity, and masculinity it was found that the vast majority of Lesbian women were clustered at the ultra feminine end of the scale and the vast majority of the Gay men were clustered at the ultra masculine end of the scale. The more obvious effeminate males were strung out along the scale across the normal feminine, androgynous, and masculine areas of the scale. The heterosexual people clustered somewhere near the center regions of the scale for feminine for women and masculine for men with considerable cross gendered behaviors for both.

The stereotype of the homosexual necessarily being an effeminate male turns out to be the rare exception to the general rule that most Gay men are ultra masculine types found in occupations such as police, military, men’s sports, and so forth. Likewise for women, the obvious Butch Lesbian is the rare exception to the general rule that most Lesbian women are the ultra feminine lipstick Lesbians that usually escape notice as being Lesbians. The testing of the transgendered people found them to be scattered all across that spectrum in accordance to the genders they identified with.

“All I know is if some perv pretending to “self identify” as a woman were to walk into a woman’s restroom my wife or daughter was using, I will “self identify” as Dirty harry or Chuck Norris and this SOB’s family will be arguing with each other as to whether or not to remove his feeding tube.”

What are your criteria for determining which are the “perv” transgndered male crossdressers, the non-threatening and legitimate intersexed transgendered women, the cisgendered Lesbians and bisexuals, and the cisgendered heterosexual women?

“I met one at Whataburger. He was wearing mascara and lipstick. Won’t go back there.”

The other day we stopped by the new Burlington Coat Factory we had not yet visited. There was this young man and sales associate with short cropped hair, ear studs, and tattoos who came over to speak with us. As he started to speak, he smiled, lifted one leg up to stand like a crane in the water with arms wrapped and hugging his body closely, as he lispthed his way through the conversation. I had to hustle my better half out of the place before the guffaws of laughter broke out. It really was that . . . extreme. If I didn’t know better I would have thought there was some kind of candid camera lurking nearby recording a new episode of Monty Python.

I posted Dr. McHugh’s article and my comment on it to my Facebook page.

When Bruce Jenner can change his DNA, then I will call him Cait. Just because someone sews a cat’s tail on their behind and walks around meowing does not make them a cat. Dr. McHugh’s theory is spot on in my opinion.
