So it appears you answered my question, which is if a husband drops dead just prior to filing, his wife, working or not, is able to collected everything which was owed to her husband as well as any benefits due her.

No. Just the higher of the two, and not until she is older, unless she is caring for a minor child, and only until that child is not longer a minor.
