As I have repeatedly said before: Not all of God's Angels have wings and halos, some have four legs and waggly tails.

My niece’s dog sleeps at the threshold of her baby’s room. Before the baby the dog slept in the living room.

It will not be long before this little one will be embraced by the One Who loves children Who said “Let the little ones come to Me” and who is to say that He will hold out a welcoming hand to the dogs.

My first thoughts as well. However, hospitals seem to be less stringent about germs than we think. My son was a preemie and spent over a week in the intensive care nursery before I could bring him to my hospital room. One of the first times I was rolling him in his bassinet to my room we encountered a patient from the children’s unit. She was a sick toddler with an IV and coughing severely all over the place. Her dad had her walking the halls and no one seemed to think it was s big deal for her to go into the OB dept.

I was a tad over protective, but he wasn’t able to go home because he was struggling to breathe and here this kid was sick enough to be hospitalized and was coughing out germs all over. All I could do was try to stand between her and my baby lying in the bassinet.

The nurses just smiled and watched.

NEAR THIS SPOT

ARE DEPOSITED THE REMAINS OF ONE

WHO POSSESSED BEAUTY WITHOUT VANITY

STRENGTH WITHOUT INSOLENCE

COURAGE WITHOUT FEROCITY

AND ALL THE VIRTUES OF MAN WITHOUT HIS VICES

THIS PRAISE WHICH WOULD BE UNMEANING FLATTERY

IF INSCRIBED OVER HUMAN ASHES

IS BUT A JUST TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF

BOATSWAIN, A DOG

WHO WAS BORN AT NEWFOUNDLAND, MAY 1803,

AND DIED AT NEWSTEAD, NOVEMBER 18, 1808.

A little over a week ago, I nearly died from a reaction to a new medication. Was something totally freak out of the blue. I couldn't even crawl on my knees, had to slither to the living room to get to the phone. For the first time in my life I saw two and three of everything.

My miniature dachshund kept licking my face, especially my ears, so that I would stay conscious enough to dial 911. I barely did that.

They said when they found me collapsed on the floor that she was curled up next to my head like she was protecting me.

I got out of the hospital a few days ago. Everything is fine now.

But nobody will ever, ever be able to persuade me that dogs do not have souls. Not after what my dog did for me a week ago.

Now that’s an epitaph. Thank you.

Oh my! So sad :-(

Praying for you , little one.

I love my furry friends (3 dogs, 5 cats, 2 horses). I'll take their instincts over a human's anyday.

I hope your son is more stable now. He’s lucky to have you as an observant, protective parent. I’m guessing this happened before MRSA infections became so prevalent in hospitials. Today, they may have offered that coughing toddler a tiny face mask to block the germs.

Epitaph to a Dog, by Lord Byron. There’s more verses to it than what was posted.

A friend had some long, drawn out trouble with the law where he had to face the whims of several judges.

His comment after it was over was interesting.

He said that DOGS, not humans, should be the judges

because a dog’s instincts are always right.

He also said he thought that dogs should be on airplanes for security—because a dog could always intuitively smell out a terrorist.

Thanks for identifying that.

I have known that for years and have it memorized,

but I never knew where it came from.

Evidently Byron wrote it for his Labrador which had just died of rabies.
