Trump has said he doesn’t need a unified Republican party to win. Perhaps I was paraphrasing, but to me that means he doesn’t need those of us Republicans who have always and wholeheartedly voted Republican. Do you understand his statement differently?

He says he doesn’t need us. Most politicians kowtow to every little segment saying 'I need your support, please support me, what can I do to get your support?'.
Trump is saying 'Here is my agenda, if you like it or can live with it, come on board, otherwise I don't need you. Criticize it and me from the outside'.
That way you can decide for yourself, but he's not coming to run after you for your support.
It's an admirable stand, one which only a confident politician would take.
That's why you've never been confronted with it before.
