Why the NRA hates smart guns
Tech Crunch ^ | Apr 30, 2016 | Jon Stokes

With yet another push from President Obama to revive initiatives to develop “smart gun” technology, it looks like it’s time to revisit the issue once again.

The most common question I got in response to my previous piece on the many problems with smart guns is, “even if you’re correct that smart guns are a bad idea, why is the NRA so opposed to letting the market even try to get it right?”

The NRA’s official position is that they don’t care one way or the other about smart gun tech, and that the market should decide, but we all know that’s baloney. The NRA doesn’t want smart guns to ever reach the market, at all.

So the question is, why? If smart guns as doomed to fail as I’ve previously argued, why not just let them fail in the market? Why try to prevent this technology from even having a chance?

Yep, New Jersey passed a smart gun law that stated that ALL firearms sold in the state would have to have smart technology 5 years after the first smart gun hit the market.

It is already the law in New Jersey that all sakes of guns without Smart Gun technology will be banned within a few years of a Smart Gun being introduced into the market.

Smart Gun technology is worse than useless for me. I always secure my firearms, either on my person or in a safe. I would never rely on Smart Gun technology to render any gun safe, just as I always assume that the gun is loaded. So all Smart Gun technology can do for me is introduce complication and new modes of failure.

I already have a Sig Sauer Mosquito. I have all the modes of failure I need...

With electronics, firearms wouldn’t last but a small portion as long. They would stop working after only a very few years.

Guns have evolved into wonderful, safe, reliable mechanical contrivances. This is one place where the intervention of electronics technology should not intrude. If you consider that the next generation of automobiles will have computers that will allow law enforcement to shut them down at will, why would we want that sort of intervention to be available with a tool that's meant to save your life?

Meaning it would become more expensive to stay effectively armed.....part of the goal.

I like the fact that my wife and I both know where some guns are stashed around the house and either can grab any of them in an emergency....

Yeah, they are certainly “particular” about what you feed them aren’t they!

When I bring out a new shooter, I start them on the Mosquito. We’ll run through a couple of boxes of Mini Mags, until they get comfortable with the gun and getting a site picture, etc.

Then I will say that I want to work on clearing jams, and I will slap in a magazine of Winchester SuperX, and I will get 5 jams in ten shots.

Wow, yours works just like mine. It runs all day on mini-mags, but nothing else! It's surprising that Sig hasn't really “fixed” this gun. But then .22LR is a lousy cartridge for a semiautomatic. I have four other Sigs and they are simply the best handguns in the safe.

Is there in your opinion a decent .22 auto?

I saw a Walther .22 at my gun store, and it looked like a cute mini clone of my Walther P99 in .40 cal.

I thought no way could a .22 cycle that mechanism.

My Ruger SR22 has failed to cycle... never.
I’ve put all sorts of 22LR rounds through it, shoots like a champ.

also have an older Ruger Mark II target 22 auto. It has never failed, but is a much larger/bulkier firearm.

I only have the one Mosquito and the only reason I have it is that it closely replicates my 229 in size and at the same time is cheap to shoot. It’s interesting that you mention Walther. We each have a Walther PPQ (9mm). For a polymer pistol, I find this gun to be absolutely a dream to shoot! I wish that my Sigs had as good a trigger. And they are dead nuts accurate! If the Walther .22 is as good as the PPQ, I’d buy one.

I have the Walther P22 that I use as a stand in for my P99 when running pistol drills. It’s a great little pistol but it is finicky regarding the type of ammo used. It’s a bit prissy.

I also have the new(ish) Ruger SR22 which will eat anything you feed it, all day long! Highly impressed with it.

Thanks for the tip. My wife has a Ruger LCR (.38spl) that she really likes except for the fact that it’s hammerless and has to be fired DA.

My Walther is a lot of fun.

I seek a .22 because my wife, who has small hands, now works from hone, alone, all day.

We have break ins during the day in my neighborhood. I want something for her.

Have you taken a look at the Beretta Tomcat? It comes in .25 and .32 auto and has a unique charging system that looks like it would work well for a woman. My wife has a SigSauer 238 (.380 auto). She loves it. It’s a mini-1911, and it’s all-metal construction. So you carry it cocked and locked, so if you need it you don’t have to cycle the slide to use it. Plus the extended mag has a grip for your pinky. The .22 just doesn’t have enough energy to suit me, plus it’s long and skinny which isn’t a good config for a semi.

A guy at Calguns.net blog did a great summary of all the 22LR out there. There are a few different brands that work. Federal Game Shok 40 grain have always been good to me.

His conclusions were that if for a brand to work in the Sig Sauer Mosquito, it had to have the following characteristics:

40 Grain
1150 - 1300 FPS
Round Nose
Copper Coated (not absolutely necessary)
Packed in 50 or 100 round racked boxes.

He found a few 1000 FPS rounds that would work, but they were rare. He did not find a single bulk packed round that would work at all.

Took me two tries to find the right one - Louis L'Amour described he in one of his novels "She's one to walk the river with".

She's been known to call me to let me know I left my spare magazine on the counter...
