A wildfire has invaded Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, forcing the entire city to be evacuated Tuesday as the large blaze engulfed homes and businesses.

Some 88,000 people were forced to leave Tuesday evening as the fire quickly spread, putting homes, schools, businesses and lives in danger, according to the Globe and Mail. Local officials said Wednesday morning that 80 percent of the homes in Beacon Hill have been lost, and the most recent census said the neighborhood is home to 2,200 residents living in more than 700 dwellings.

At a Wednesday morning briefing, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said the fire had grown to 18,500 acres, and 1,600 structures had been destroyed. So far, no serious injuries or deaths have been reported from the devastating blaze.

This is a phenomenal event.

A good sized city of about 80,000 being evacuated as it is destroyed by a wildfire.

My son, who served his LDS Mission in that part of Canada and was located in Fort McMurray has many dear friends there.

We need to pray for these people.

It is simply amazing to see some of the photos.

If those are people evacuating, why is there a traffic jam going the other way, too?

88,000 mostly white people having their city and homes burnt to the ground is trivial to the liberal news media in the USA.

Still no cause?

It's a perfect storm... very dry and unusually hot temperatures, it was a low snow cover winter, lots of dead wood nearby that are left over from a pine beetle kill over the last years.... Daily Planet did an lengthy piece on it tonight. If you check in a day or so, it will be posted on the Discover channel.

They can’t determine a cause without putting it out first or at least under control.

Alberta’s aging forest is putting communities at ever greater risk of wildfires, an expert committee on containing such fires warned the provincial government in 2012.

In 1971, more than half of Alberta’s boreal forest was deemed to be young, with about a third classified as immature, five per cent considered mature and a small portion deemed “overmature.”

By 2011 however, that had changed to less than 10 per cent young, about a quarter immature, more than 40 per cent mature, and more than 20 per cent overmature.

“Before major wildfire-suppression programs, boreal forests historically burned on an average cycle ranging from 50 to 200 years as a result of lightning and human-caused wildfires,” the panel said in a report released in 2012.

“Wildfire suppression has significantly reduced the area burned in Alberta’s boreal forest. However, due to reduced wildfire activity, forests of Alberta are aging,...

Funny you would post that.... I basically pointed to the same reason while watching the Discovery piece tonight. So much for the ‘save a tree’ crowd.

Another example of “State owned and mismanaged” forest lands? Trainees from our BLM, park and forestry services?
