GOP senator [Sasse] calls for 'adult' third-party candidate

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is calling for a third-party presidential candidate to emerge, saying there is no reason to believe that either of the two national front-runners "believe in limiting anything about DC's power."

The conservative senator late Wednesday issued the call in a letter on Facebook to "the majority of Americans" who wonder why the U.S. "can't find a healthy leader who can take us forward together." "With Clinton and Trump, the fix is in. Heads, they win; tails, you lose. Why are we confined to these two terrible options? This is America. If both choices stink, we reject them and go bigger," Sasse wrote.

"Why shouldn't America draft an honest leader who will focus on 70% solutions for the next four years? You know...an adult?" Sasse added.

Sasse envisions a candidate who hasn't spent their life in politics, "either buying politicians or being bought." He also wants a candidate to serve for only one term "as a care-taker problem-solver for this messy moment."

Sasse, the father of three kids, indicated he's not interested in being that candidate himself, arguing for someone who can campaign around the clock through November.

"Although I'm one of the most conservative members of the Senate, I'm not interested in an ideological purity test, because even a genuine consensus candidate would almost certainly be more conservative than either of the two dishonest liberals now leading the two national parties," he added.

Sasse is one of few leading Republicans who have indicated that they will never support Trump as the nominee and signaled in February that if Trump becomes the presumptive GOP nominee, as the businessman has this week, he'd look for a third-party alternative.

Sen Sasse’s definition of “adult”: willing to give in to liberals for the sake of comity.

Degree in Government? Like that’s a good thing? From Harvard?

It's a stepping stone towards becoming a fellow traveler.

Would Sasse have been happier with Bush or Lindsey Graham. I doubt he would have had this visceral reaction. Maybe it’s time to take a closer look at Ben.

Principles Senator?

How about the principle that you don’t get to use the party to get elected then throw a hissy fit when they don’t nominate YOUR guy?

Resign today Senator. Resign from the party. run for your seat as an independent. THAT is principal. What your doing you spoiled little brat is petulance, not principal.

I'm considering rage-quitting the GOP, but you guys have to promise to be like, “Nooo! Don't do it! We'll be lost without your commentary!”

You’re correct. If Trump loses, I want to see an end of the GOP establishment.

Geezus.

Sen. Sasse, please tell me what’s not conservative about prioritizing the immigration issue, and wanting to build the wall?

What’s not conservative about saying political correctness has now placed us in grave danger, and proposing a ban on immigration from certain Islamic countries until we “can sort this thing out?

One can quibble, but what’s not conservative about the Trump tax plan? His stand on energy in general, and coal in particular?

I would have been just fine with Ted Cruz but HE DIDN’T WIN!

What’s conservative about wanting to change the rules now, and win only at the cost of disenfranchising the millions who pulled the lever for Donald Trump?

OK, Trump’s not perfect, Mitt Romney is? You seem to say you have the credentials, but you have to stay home with your kids. Donald Trump too, has better things to do than dodge the arrows you guys have been flinging his way for months now.

You send out this plea to dump Trump, but don’t even suggest a replacement. How arrogantly presumptive of your intellect over ours!

Cancel your subscription to National Review and the Weekly Standard please! Never mind, keep this crap up and you’ll need something to do when we give you even more time to spend at home with your children.

How very adolescent of this “adult” to think of running as a spoiler to give Hillary the White House.

He has no money.

He has no time.

Therefore he's just facebooking, which is beneath contempt for anyone who calls themselves a conservative...

Do it, Senator. Maybe you could put Senator Lindsay Graham at the head of the ticket. Then, you could get a whole 1% of the popular vote in November.
