Rob Portman criticizes North Carolina 'bathroom law,' Trump's national debt plan

COLUMBUS, Ohio—U.S. Sen. Rob Portman on Monday criticized North Carolina's restrictions on public bathroom access for transgender people and took issue with Donald Trump's proposal to cut the national debt by giving creditors less than full payment.

The Ohio Republican, speaking with reporters at a warehouse in Columbus, said North Carolina's new limits on protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are "a bad law."

"You need to not discriminate against people and be sure that we are respecting religious liberties," Portman said. "That can be done, and I do not believe that the North Carolina law accomplishes that."

Portman, who came out in support of same-sex marriage in 2013 after his son revealed he was gay, pointed to Utah's anti-discrimination law, which he said "achieved that balance."

The senator also voiced caution about reducing the national debt by persuading creditors to accept less than full payment, as suggested Friday by Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee.

Portman, who has endorsed Trump, said while he hasn't reviewed the details of Trump's proposal, the way to address the $19.2 trillion national debt "is not to take away from the full faith and credit that people believe they have when they buy treasuries."

He added, "I would be concerned about anything that would take away from that."

Portman's comments came after he accepted an endorsement from the National Federation of Independent Business.

Juanita Duggan, the new president of the Washington, D.C.-based NFIB, said small business owners "don't have a more dependable ally in Washington than Rob Portman," noting the senator has a 100-percent voting record for the group's key issues.

It's not just about single stall unisex bathrooms or not. That's a tempest in a teapot. The NC Law prohibited the required mixing of sexes in dressing facilities and common areas as well which is what the city law was doing.

Who wants their daughters forced to change and shower with the boys in the school locker rooms or your wife with the guys at the workout gym?

In finance, paying back less than borrowed is called giving the banks, or lenders a haircut. It is done all the time in workouts and turnarounds. I have participated in many on both sides....the barber and the victim. Right now, we are doing the same thing by merely inflating the debt away (paying off old debt with devalued, quantitatively eased currency) all the while paying zero or wait for it....negative interest.

It is coming. If interest rates return to normal levels, half the budget becomes interest payments. That has been the plan all along....like in Greece.

“Ask yourselves, who will lend to us at anything less than high rates if we refuse to pay back our debts?”

Friend, the time to get all indignant about the possibility that we would pay our debts back was about 10 Trillion ago.

Not only are we not going to pay back our debts, but folks will be lucky to get 10% in real value compared to what they loaned us.

Pretend all you want that Trump isn’t right, but on this one he’s right.

Well, I’ll vote for him too over Strikland, but I was hoping he would have lost the primary.

Someone tried. The poor guy had no name recognition and obviously no money to campaign because the only reason I knew was because I saw something in the paper. I looked the guy up, saw he was more conservative than Portman, and voted for him. He still managed 30% of the vote, but Portman won in a landslide. It’s very difficult to primary existing Congressmen and Senators.

Are the liberals wanting men to spray all over flushes in the ladies’ rooms so they can spread AIDS?
