Ted Cruz Backers Seek to Control Convention Platform
New York Times ^ | May 9, 2016 | Jonathan Martin

Posted on 05/09/2016 1:05:13 PM PDT by Innovative

Senator Ted Cruz’s supporters are mounting an effort to seize control of the Republican platform and the rules governing the party’s July convention, the first indication that Mr. Cruz will not simply hand his delegates over to Donald J. Trump.

In an email sent Sunday to pro-Cruz convention delegates, a top aide to the Texas senator wrote that it was “still possible to advance a conservative agenda at the convention.”

“To do that, it is imperative that we fill the Rules and Platform Committees with strong conservative voices like yours,” wrote Ken Cuccinelli, who was the campaign’s former delegate wrangler and a former attorney general of Virginia. “That means you need to come to the national convention and support others in coming, too!”

Mr. Cruz is planning a Monday evening conference call where, as Mr. Cuccinelli writes, Mr. Cruz’s former officials plan to “discuss what we can do at the convention to protect against liberal changes to our platform, and how we can right the wrongs in the rules from 2012!”

Won't these Cruzlims be shocked as Hell when they start looking back at previous Republican Party Platforms, and discover that Trump is the only candidate in more than three decades that has even come close to the mark?

‘for many here on the 7th day Trump rested’

One of Cruz’ and his supporters’ biggest mistakes was misunderstanding why people support Trump, and in particular misunderstanding the nature of that support. Nothing underscores that misunderstanding more than comparisons between Trump and God. Trump supporters see him as a flawed human being who will put America first. Cruz supporters insistence that this amounts to ‘worship’ did them far more harm than good from the beginning.

When does Trump take charge of the apparatus of the gop? After the convention?

I agree. If Trump’s path to more than 1237 delegates is clear, then Trump — except for the passage of time — WILL BE our nominee.

I am OK with Ryan saying he will support Trump as soon as that 1237th delegate is won. Ryan says that his position, until that moment comes, must be “neutral”. That seems right and proper to me.

Of course, the media wants us to fight and “make headlines” so they can book more revenue! So they “hype” and mislead us!

However, if Trump’s path to the 1237 delegates is NOT clear, then he and his staff have to work, work, work to deliver that victory BEFORE the Convention.

Meanwhile, let’s not “spike the football” before we have crossed the goal line!

But someone should remind the Cruz Team that “sour grapes” never won an election.

Trump is more to the right than all the 17 candidates he dispatched.

Oh, give it a rest. The race is over. Trump is the nominee. This is just about maintaining conservative principles in the platform.

What "conservative" principles? Open borders? TPP? Elimination of the middle class?

It was actually Trump pushing Cruz to the right during the primary. Cruz previously favored mass legalization of, to use him term, ‘undocumented immigrants.’ Only after Trump advocated a wall and deportation did Cruz reverse his former stance.

You are silly. We had the senate, house and the presidency under bush and we got nothing conservative. We have abortion on demand with Reagan and bush. Nobody wants to get rid of abortion. It’s all BS nonsense for delusional people like you to kiss their butt. It’s over. Trump is for getting rid of refugees, build a wall, fix the economy and bring back jobs and fix the screwed up trade deals the republican house did.

Not at all but I won’t pretend that Trump has ever been for ANYTHING for the conservative cause. There have been champions for that cause that have spent a lot of time and effort fighting for conservative principles. Trump has just become a candidate of timing and circumstance (a populous message)..

Again I’m not fighting against Trump only will be critical when it is needed and encouraging those who wish to be critical as well. I will support him for the nomination and general. But I won’t allow him to go unchecked and pretend to blind my eyes when he runs contrary to conservative doctrine.

Being antagonistic is not helping. As I already said, they don’t care about conservatism, just want to help Cruz get the nomination, then he could lose spectacularly to Hillary. How will that help conservatism?

Lol. Trump was the only one of the 17 that supports Kelo. I could go on but in the interest of defeating Hillary I won’t.

wow, what a delusional thing to say

Cruz was to the right of all of them, except when trump wanted votes in traditional red states, then, trump was just as right as cruz
then, when trump went to blue states, he started to show his historical colors

as for illegals, you mean the ones trump employed, or the ones his recipients of his thousands of dollars protected throuogh legislation?

The nomination process is over. Trump supporters can not be trusted to rein him in. So somebody has to keep him from changing the abortion plank, the property plank and the “ nothing burger” plank that keeps the mentally ill with penises out of my granddaughters bathrooms.

Cruz is imperfect as is Trump....Trump won and I shall support him. So far he is doing well and saying the right things. I hope this carries long after the general. As with any republican, I’ll praise him when he hits it right one the head and rail him when he has it wrong....but I won’t shield my eyes or be silent if he needs to be called out.

I’d expect that of any conservative actually. Unlike Obama who can do and has done no wrong :-)

This is true and was a prime topic at our congressional district convention. Trump has made some good moves for conservatives which have not been reported in the media widely like these for example which is getting close to the meeting of the minds:

Back with the purity again. Let it go. As a candidate and person, Cruz leaves a lot to be desired.
