Speaker Paul Ryan and Donald Trump dialed back their rhetoric Monday after a weekend of sniping between the nations highest-ranking elected Republican and the partys presumptive presidential nominee.
But the bad blood and stark policy differences between the two GOP heavyweights left some observers questioning whether Ryan (Wis.) ever will find it in himself to back Trump before the November election.
Ryans and Trumps efforts to strike a more conciliatory tone come ahead of their high-stakes huddle Thursday at Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters, in the shadow of the Capitol. While theyve briefly met once before, Thursdays gathering represents the first formal sit-down between two men who dont really know or trust each other.
In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Monday, Ryan lamented the fact that he doesnt know Trump very well and suggested an endorsement might still be in the cards.
I never said never, the Speaker said.
He also poured cold water on the possibility of a conservative candidate launching a third-party bid, warning it would be disastrous for our party.
And he offered to resign as chairman of the Republican National Convention if that were Trumps desire.
Hes the nominee. Ill do whatever he wants, Ryan said in an interview with the Wisconsin newspaper.

Well, Ryan is no “heavy weight”— I assure you. Trump will eat him like a grape. Using the “ Art of The Deal” he will throw him a SOP to save face. He will let the new dog in the house piss somewhere and then he will throw him OUT!! but get ready for the Trump BULL DOZIER!! I laugh at that arrogant RYno. He is nothing but the ex-establishment. WE OWN THIS PARTY NOW!!Go TRUMP!!
Too late, too late, for his case it is sealed.
His sentence it is passed, and cannot be repealed.
MY Opinion for what it’s worrh
Ryan and many of his colleagues are dependent upon the finances from a few. We all know as Trump points out, it puts those supplying the money in control
If this were a topic of discussion it might be possible for Trump to help break this cycle not just for the betterment of the individuals, but for congress and the betterment of the nation.
I suggested months ago the possibility of Trumps wealthy friends creating an anonymous fund where candidates could go to secure funding for their campaign. It would stop the dependency on lobbyists
Pray that something good comes from it
Yep! I love alpha-males!!!
Ryan is a traitor. He cannot be trusted
His aim was waaaay off
If we keep him, later it will be whack-a-mole.
It will be work, work, work and we’ll regret not making an example of him.
Nah, we need to discard all sympathy, and push harder than ever, desperately if need be, and banish this deeply gay, America-hating man.
OUT.
Good
Agreed.
OUT!
Ryan is a slithering snake, IMO.
Ryan could have stepped up, opposed Obama on issues, and built a power base. Instead he stepped up to the position, and became a 21st century cave man. He caved on everything.
He tried to go toe to toe against Trump. Well, guess what. That didn’t work so well.
I appreciate that he might be moderating, but then he’s facing a serious threat. If he had moderated upon becoming the Speaker, I’d not be looking to remove him.4
Too little, too late...
More icebreaking:
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Reps. Duncan Hunter and Darrell Issa, R-Calif., have signed up as Donald Trump’s delegates in California - @ShaneGoldmacher
That don't pertain to this flea-bitten RINO who already threw himself under his own omnibus and then called for enacting a "conservative agenda."
{BLINK}
I love Fairport Convention’s cover.
Deek, the Cruz folks should be praying Trump will fulfill his promises and help us turn this nation around.
Instead I am led to believe they are praying the nation fails, so they can say, “I told you so.”
It’s past time to go at each other, but if Cruz folks think they are going to get free shots here endlessly at Trump’s expense, they need to think again.
It’s time to pull together now.
