Almost no one saw Donald Trump coming a year ago, it seems. And there's all sorts of finger-pointing as to why: Journalists blew it. Or maybe it was political scientists' fault.
But there's one big reason why so many smart people overlooked him: He's the opposite of what many of the loudest voices in the Republican Party said they wanted.
Last year, GOP pollster Whit Ayres famously laid out what the party would need to win the White House in 2016 and Beyond. In particular, Ayres' data-heavy book focused on the nation's demographics, insisting that the party had to win over nonwhites, and particularly Hispanics. Perhaps unsurprisingly, his conclusions in several ways mirrored what the GOP laid out in its 2013 "autopsy": The party needed to change with a changing America, reaching out in particular to minorities, young people and women. (It's one reason Ayres eventually backed Marco Rubio for his potential for broader appeal.)

In this article they rate the Republican primary candidates based on what the GOP leaders and experts wanted. Ryan comes in first. Kasich second.
Trump comes in dead last.
A dirtbag that never had a job and never won statewide, bought and paid for by chamber of commies.
Maybe we don’t even like Paul Ryan and the rest of the globalist elitist backstabbers who are a cancer on a true Republican Party that would embrace Constitutional Conservative principles.
Ryan is young. Maybe in a few years... however if he angers too many rank and file conservatives, he won’t have a chance. I wonder if he has already destroyed his chances.
The GOPES are all dopes for the Cheap Labor Express
IMHO Ryan ended his political career when he signed off on that budget deal.
The same way Rubio did when he joined the Gang of Eight.
Unless they want to become Democrats.
Excellent point.
Is this the Paul Ryan that the DNC attack ad showed pushing grandma off the cliff...that Paul Ryan...
Don’t be surprised if ted Cruz comes out and says, “Me love Paul Ryan long time!”
Many of the loudest voices in the Republican Party wanted the gravy train to keep rolling, at our expense. It’s loud whining.
I have to say I have been very entertained this week over Trump’s meetings with Ryan, etc. It was a brilliant PR move for both the RNC and Trump. All this kerfuffle about whether Ryan and other RNC elites will endorse Trump helped keep Trump in the headlines and overshadowed activities on the Democratic side of the ticket. They need to keep this drama going all the way to the convention. Anyone who does not think this is entirely manufactured for the sake of the media is fooling themselves. Oh, and the float about Gingrich is equally impressive stuff.
>>> NPR is usually wrong about everything.
They still are.
Jeb! should have been the one anointed, Rubio comes in close second. GOP establishment can work with both. Ryan is not even on the radar, until only recently.
Ryan is a policy wonk and for that I admire him; we need ideas for solving today’s economic problems, especially entitlements. However, this does not energize the voting masses, especially when up against Democratic pandering to the lowest common denominator. Trump’s appearance on the scene has changed that and much for the better. He has changed the political world and for that we are thankful.
Sarah Palin just took out the wobbly, weazily, woebegone, wascal!
Anyone who does not think this is entirely manufactured for the sake of the media is fooling themselves.
The media knows what is going on. CNN had 3 hysterical never Trumpers on providing commentary while the meeting was going on.
They would prefer Satan to Trump. Too bad, he is speaker of the House.
“Four top conservative strategists and pollsters” or “Four top economists and economic experts from right-leaning organizations” for their arbitrary ratings; otherwise they (npr) use polls
for their matrix and evaluations.
OK then let's see npr’s matrix for Democrat candidates with the same evaluation and same categories.
