It was apparently a cell phone device connected to some ‘pipes’, and they blew it up with a controlled explosion. This seems similar to the planned Paris attack at PSG’s stadium. I'm sure the police were concerned that this device was just one part of a coordinated attack in and outside the stadium. Maybe nothing, but maybe disaster averted.
