A 37-year-old man has admitted in court that he ripped off a woman's hijab on board a flight in the US after screaming "Take it off! This is America!".

Gill Parker Payne of Gastonia, from North Carolina, pleaded guilty in a New Mexico federal court to a misdemeanour hate crime charge of using force to intentionally obstruct the woman's free exercise of her religious beliefs.

Seated a few rows in front of him was a woman he had never met before. She was wearing a hijab, which Payne recognised as a Muslim practice.

He stood up, walked down the aisle and stopped next to her seat. Looking down at the woman, Payne instructed her to remove the covering, the Washington Post reported.

"Take it off! This is America!" Payne was quoted as telling the woman. When she did not do it herself, Payne grabbed the hijab from the back and pulled it all off.

Assault. Simple as that. Had I been there I would have floored Goober with a yokomen uchi right smack to the temple. Who died and made him king?

Exactly. Too bad there were not any real men on the flight who would have taken care of him pronto. Maybe there were and it’s not been reported.

That was assault, plain and simple. If a woman in America wants to wear something that covers her head or face, she's perfectly entitled to.

My God! The rationalizations for such overt un-American bigotry are astounding...

First...hate crime? Barbara Streisand! Simple assault? Maybe....but not a "hate crime".Should he be punished? Perhaps.Maybe a small fine and some probation time.Nothing more.

Was it a stupid thing to do? Yes,absolutely. Can I understand why he might have *wanted* to do it? Yes,absolutely!

Oh, and by draw offensive religious symbols I was referring to the ones I listed in the next sentence, not that I would support him attacking someone wearing them. Unlike muzlims who make a practice of attacking someone wearing something religious that offends their “religion”. Like a yarmulke.

Since your IQ is obviously somewhere around your normal respiration rate.

He did not “assault” her. He firmly removed a symbol of religious intolerance and hatred being openly worn in a public area.

Only an idiot thinks that wearing a hijab/niquab (-distinction? Not that I care) in public is being “dressed”, at least in civilized countries. But I suppose if someone wishes to prance about in a loincloth because that is how they dress “back home” you would take an identical stance.

You are definitely squirrelbait, gramps.

Look up the legal definition of assault.
Or ask an attorney.
It was simple assault, which on an airplane can get you 6 months in prison. 18 U.S.C. § 113

I don’t condone assaulting people just because one doesn’t like how they look or dress. If that were legal (which it thankfully is not) I could legally assault half the people I see out in public.

You may want to live in a country with no rule of law and people able to legally assault others for ... whatever reason they want. But I do not.

She was wearing a hijab, which Payne recognised as a Muslim practice.

50 years ago it wasn't so widely required in the middle east.

Right, well, I am logging off again before the blood pressure gets too much higher.

Anyone who thinks I might have even a smidgen of sympathy for a follower of a “religion” whose laws dictate that they must convert, enslave, or kill anyone who does not follow their teachings should not hold their breath, as the username byline I have used for years now should have given you sufficient notice about how much I care what upsets them in any manner whatsoever.

Now, I must be off to draw some more mu-ham-edd caricatures along with many pig cartoons in as many public places as I can. ;)

He violated her personal space.

Her religious tradition is a recent political turn.

Egypt’s upscale spaces ban hijabi women

The trend of upscale restaurants and resorts in Egypt denying entry to women wearing veils seems to be on the rise

It is better to let sleeping dogs fly.

Many of us are fed up with the general situation of Islamic cultural supremacy and terrorism, but at the same time, we have traditions of privacy and tolerance that require us to exercise some degree of restraint.

This was not a wise move, there are times to be proactive and we should recognize those times, but I don’t think the appearance of a total stranger in a neutral and non-threatening situation rises to that level.

Pick your fights wisely.
