Woman Records Her Own Murder with Smartphone, Authorities Say

A woman murdered by her boyfriend had the foresight to audio record her own slaying in Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Wesley Webb apparently began taping while she was engaged in a verbal domestic dispute with her boyfriend Keith Smith on May 2.

She was sitting on the couch and said she was going to take two of the children from the home on Buckwalter Road in Schuykill Township, according to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office.

“You want to record it now…?” Smith allegedly said in the recording.

Smith then grabbed his single-shot, 12-gauge shotgun and shot Webb in the chest. The shooting is heard in the recording.

“… How’s that. That’s where we just went,” Smith then allegedly said on the recording.

He then reloaded and turned the shotgun on himself.

Although Smith shot himself in the face, he survived. The three children upstairs – all younger than 14 – came downstairs to find their mother dead – and they called 9-1-1.

Smith allegedly confessed to responding authorities before he was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is being held without bail, and is charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, endangering the welfare of children and other charges.

“This case is a tragic example of technology and the law catching up to criminals,” said Tom Hogan, the Chester County District Attorney. “Until 2012 in Pennsylvania, a victim’s recording of her own murder would have been inadmissible under the Pennsylvania Wiretap Act. This law was changed in 2012, fixing a glaring omission.

“But that is slight Colace for the children and family of the victim in this case,” Hogan added.

Unless I’m missing something, it looks like they planned this, except he lived. It sounds like suicide by lunatic boyfriend.

I could be wrong but it doesn't sound like that to me.It sounds like just another filthy psychopath husband/boyfriend who didn't have the common courtesy to shoot himself *before* he shot the woman.

Was this a suicide pact? Did the mother know she was going to be killed? Why are there first degree and third degree murder charges? Unless I’m missing something, it looks like they planned this, except he lived. It sounds like suicide by lunatic boyfriend.

What? Where do you get the idea of a suicide pact? During the fight, she threatened to take the kids and leave and he grabbed a shotgun and killed her.

Serious question. In a state where the law requires two party consent, would this be admissible evidence?

LOL — ah, the venerable mimeograph! When I was a kid, I loved being in the front of the row in class, so I’d get the whole stack of fresh copies when the teacher would hand ‘em out. They smelled great!

And we used to fight to take the erasers and run ‘em through the cleaning machine. (that was kinda like a jointer/planer...)

As for the technology thing, I’m a hopeless literalist. My mother in law used to drive me crazy, referring to game cartridges as ‘Atari tapes’. Yeesh...
