S: One of the current debates is over "cultural appropriation" ... that white people should not appropriate the culture of ethnic and racial minorities. ... Have you followed this conversation?
DH: Are you trying to say that I don't own the style of music that I grew up with and sing? I grew up with this music. It is not about being black or white. That is the most naïve attitude I've ever heard in my life. That is so far in the past, I hope, for everyone's sake. It isn't even an issue to discuss. The music that you listened to when you grew up is your music. It has nothing to do with "cultural appropriation
S: I agree with you entirely, because...
DH: I'm glad that you do, because anyone who says that should shut the f*** up.

Should blacks be allowed to use electricity, indoor plumbing and go to the dentist or would that not be appropriate to the culture of other ethnic and racial groups?
Using the f-word is cultural appropriation.
Sadly, Daryl grew up in a generation where white kids admired and tried to emulate aspects of black music and society viewed it as good. He now lives in a world where societal elites collectively tell white people to collectively “shut the f___ up.”
this is a brilliant article.
Daryl Hall in this both lives and articulates what is best about America....and how the Orwellian “diversity” crowd knows nothing of culture, or diversity, or community, or excellence, or even of soul.
Brilliant.

This is all identity politics nonsense. Chuck Berry was a big fan of Bob Wills and Jimmie Rodgers. Nobody is accusing him of “cultural appropriation” are they?
I love how Daryl calls the interviewer out and doesn’t take any crap.
The idiot interviewer struck to close to the bone, and waded into territory where Daryl was very well-prepared.
In this regard, Daryl reminded me of Trump.
Hit back against idiocy. This is fantastic. And note also how Daryl quotes with absolute authority the great soulful Ray Charles (well the interviewer quotes him first, but Daryl chimes in). What Daryl does here is rhetorically brilliant: he shows that we - those who labor within their particular tradition and bring it forward, expanding on it - don’t think at all in terms of the meaningless categories of the resentment left. “Race” is just not an issue for us. But the standards of what we are working on ...is very much an issue for us, and we draw inspiration from excellence wherever we find it.
Thank you for posting this. It is a brilliant, succinct application of our thought in action.
(I’m sure Daryl Hall is probably a democrat...that’s irrelevant...his deeper points which he makes here with absolute clarity and force are what matters).
thank you.
That is a very beautiful (er, soulful) piece of music.
Chuck Berry was a big fan of Bob Wills”
I was NOT aware of that...but...now that you point it out, it makes sense...and is freaking brilliant.
So a white R&B artist uses black music to obtain stardom and tells people in public how stupid he is.
some of the instrumentalists on that piece...are really exceptional.
Roger that. No doubt he’s probably a dem(well I really don’t know for certain) but it’s nice that he called this asshat out on said asshats assertions. So by the asshats way of thinking, when I go jam with some “brothers” I shouldn’t play and “black” songs? Not gonna happen. As a matter of act we did “Poppa Was A Rolling Stone” last night and I must say my use of my wah wah peddle sounded pretty dang good. LOL!
Appropriate this, morons.
the left contributes about as much to culture as does isis
I wonder: do you think Hall’s response would be as strong as it is were Trump not on the scene, leading the charge against the asshats?
I’m not so sure. I think Trump has shown lots of people that calling out the asshats is essential...if we are going to survive. (And we will).
