I’m guessing the buyers of Chinese steel care about as much about quality as the companies that used to buy Chinese drywall. Once it’s in a product and sold to the public, nobody gives a damn.

Exactly how many American steel plants are still open?

The Enviros have done their best to shut down all kinds of industries.

Same thing for tire companies.

There are few American tire companies any more, and Obama put a 25% tax on all tires from China.

I hate it when I have to buy new tires for my vehicles. That 25% extra galls me.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and am old enough to remember the days of the “USW Tariff”.

You did not dare park your Toyota or Datsun on a Pittsburgh street, or by the time you came back, someone would have taken a sledgehammer to it.

I’ve seen photos of some of the bolts. Weren’t those fractured bolts set in 30’ of concrete?

Our daughter’s family and wife and I live in Walnut Creek, son and family live in San Fran. We go across the bridge a few times a month. The first time we crossed, I told my wife and daughter that the bridge would not sustain a 7 earthquake. Then when bolts started failing, there were no arguments from the family.

The Trump effect!

China was trying to completely destroy the US Steel industry as it did many other U.S. industries. This move should stop them. Where are the cries from the enemy mainstream media and free traitors that say that lie for China?

America once made competent decisions on major projects before crony capitalism, political correctness, corruption, politics usurped competence.
The individuals responsible need to be named and pictured and not given the benefit of political cover.

Excellent comments. My friends in the South were appalled when Smithfield was sold to China. Smithfield was ome of the biggest pork producters in the U.S. They also run retail food outlets for pork and chicken that are worth driving miles out of one’s way.

But that’s nothing compared to steel and other heavy industry. Thank God we finally have a spokesman and a champion trying to get back what has been sold out from under us.

I sure wouldn’t use Chinese steel on anything important ie. bridges, building frames, military , etc.

I seem to recall a story from years ago about the screws that hold airplane wings onto the fusilage shearing off inflight. Made in China...

Excellent Post. All Americans should read it to find out what china has been doing to the USA.

The obamatrade TPP will completely destroy any U.S. industries still in the USA , steel etc. TPP only helps China even more.

TPP is much worse than even NAFTA (Clinton signed NAFTA)

In Tons how many more times does China manufacture in tons of steel vs the USA ? I’d guess it’s many times.

Factories = production = mass production = wealth building. Hard to produce much wealth being a busboy or a waiter.

China is destroying the USA and has been for 30 years. Look at their cities, 25,000 skycrapers planned for the coming decades in China.

If you look at the steel production by country in the link I posted, you will see that China outproduces the United States about 10 to 1. They are over 800 million tons and we produce about 80. We are still one of the top steel producing nations in the world; Japan is second in production to China, but with an output of 125 million tons. Or not that much more than us. China is by far the largest producer and have stated their goal is an output of one billion tons annually, a truly staggering amount.

As an aside, it takes about one ton of coal to one ton of ore to make steel. Think of the implications of China’s rapidly increased steel production on world demand for coal. With that increase in coal consumption, consider whether China has any serious intent to abide by any sort of climate treaty. Also ask why the American environmental lobby isn’t screaming their heads off about it. The answer is that the environmental lobby is bought and paid for by the Chinese to hamstring OUR industry, not theirs.

If I recall correctly, at one time our domestic steel production peak was around 115 to 120 million tons, and fairly constant at that level for several decades from the 1960s to 1980s.

America consumes over 100 million tons of steel annually, so our production does not meet consumption by a large margin.

And I hate buying US branded, chinese made crap tires that last nowhere near as long as the domestic made tires. And, the tires aren’t any cheaper.
