Question to our Navy personal, renaming ships, does it happen? How’s it viewed?

Renaming a ship that has already been named is considered bad luck. But it has been done many times from the 1940s onward to the present day. I don’t know of any that suffered any particular bad luck from being renamed.

“Now what she’s named, so let her stay says I. So it was with the Cassandra which brought us all home safe from the taking of the Empress of India. And so it was with Flints old Walrus, which I saw amok with the red blood, and fit to sink with gold.”- Long john Silver.
