There are XX chromosomes and XY chromosomes. Anything that interferes with the manifestations of the effects of these determining factors ends up as “neuter”.
The Germans handled the indeterminate gender well for years, “der” for male, “die” for female, and “das” for neuter. But perhaps political correctness has affected the German language to about the same degree it has affected English.
