Companies propose deep-water wind farms off Hawaii shores

Massive wind turbines could end up floating in deep ocean waters off Hawaii's shores under proposals to bring more renewable energy to the islands.

Two companies have proposed offshore wind turbine projects for federal waters off Oahu as Hawaii pushes to meet its aggressive renewable energy goals.

Their plans would use technology that floats the tall turbines in deep waters miles offshore. The proposals are in the early stages and would face years of environmental reviews and community meetings before possible approval.

The federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the agency that would decide whether to approve ocean leases for the projects, held a meeting about the proposals Monday.

A.W. Hawaii Wind, a Texas company that's a subsidiary of Denmark-based Alpha Wind Energy, is proposing two offshore floating wind farms, each generating about 400 megawatts of energy with 50 turbines. One is proposed for the northwest side of Oahu 12 miles off the coast of Kaena Point, in waters about a half-mile deep. The company also is proposing a wind farm in waters 17 miles south of Diamond Head.

A second company, Progression Hawaii Offshore Wind, is proposing a $1.8 billion, 400 megawatt wind farm using 40 to 50 floating turbines off Oahu's South Shore, in waters that are also about a half-mile deep.

Better park them off shore from the working class communities.

Rich people don’t like having their ocean views cluttered.

In other words, uneconomic subsidy farms.

Windmills are the new smoke-stacks.

150 years ago, tall chimneys were a sign of advancement and progress. No one questioned them, and probably, a community welcomed them because they meant progress, jobs, and fulfillment of an ideology.

Now greens and our fake global warming propaganda have turned windmills into the new symbols of progress. Funny how no leftists question taking thousands of acres of beautiful natural scenery (by default, these must be located at ocean vistas, plateaus or mountaintops) to cover with windmills, but they would fight tooth-and-nail if anything else was put there.

Last time I looked, Hawaii was a Volcano and an Islan, which means it is surrounded by water.. Maybe they should learn how to boil water instead and see what they come up with.

I wonder how much this is going to cost the taxpayer?

Why not utilize older nuclear powered naval vessels to simply generate power?

Something that nobody addresses...and this is strictly observational not an accusation.

If you install those windmills....

Doesn’t that slow down the prevailing wind speed/intensity?

What about the environmental effects of reduced wind speeds on ocean surface temperatures since those winds distribute that energy to places downstream?

What about the effects of that increased ocean temperatures to the sea life down wind?

What about the overall effect of those windmills on the global climate?

To suggest that the installation of windmills will have no effect is preposterous. The energy that they siphon off the prevailing winds is not free and it may have a more broad effect on the global environment.

Just looking at this from the perspective of your average enviro-nutjob. If they are so blithe to potential adverse effects of their favored technologies, and yet so critical of the potential effects of technologies they do not favor why do they not address these issues in their environmental impact statements.

Should make interesting wash ups and beach litter when they invariably break away from their moorings.

That’s probably their plan. They need something to prove that temperatures are rising. They install enough windmills and there will be an adverse environmental impact.

If you want to see heads explode explain to liberals that all of these phenomena used to generate “free” power are created by tides and sunlight. Using tides slows the moon in its orbit. It could be enough to change the moon’s trajectory towards the earth instead of away as it is now. Sure it would take a loooong time. But don’t tell liberals that.

Nothing is free. Ever.

Fish Sticks anyone?

They are idiot sticks!

The existing wind farms in Hawaii are idled and rusting.

Subsidies? (stolen from hard working citizens) Build wind farms.

No subsidies. Abandon wind farms.

If it does NOT work on land, how the heck does putting it out in the ocean help?

Wouldn’t it be easier to build some sort of hydro electric plant and use the force of waves to drive turbines?

didn’t they quit using the wind farms on land over there 2 or 3 years ago when they were no longer receiving tax payer money?
