In 1968 Chicago, the police fought back, hard. Leaving lefties with bleeding skulls kind of hard. The police had the full backing of their mayor.

As riots go, it was pretty tame. I was blocks away from it (I had been at the Museum of Science and Industry with my grandfather) and then we watched it on local TV. A little blood, a little tear gas, a little wood shampooing.
Just like the REAL Mayor Daley said: “Gentlemen, let’s get this thing straight, once and for all. The policeman is not here to create disorder. The policeman is here to preserve disorder.”
