AI will create 'useless class' of human, predicts bestselling historian

Harari calls it “the rise of the useless class” and ranks it as one of the most dire threats of the 21st century. In a nutshell, as artificial intelligence gets smarter, more humans are pushed out of the job market. No one knows what to study at college, because no one knows what skills learned at 20 will be relevant at 40. Before you know it, billions of people are useless, not through chance but by definition.

Dumbass. We're already surrounded by UPOS. It DOESN'T take a robot. Pandering has pretty well done the job.

Might mark the return of a TRUE “liberal arts” education. A well-rounded human capable of adapting to multiple jobs/careers over their lifespan.

We already have a useless class, and they are destroying this country. I won’t live to see it, but the day is coming...

Yeah, not a new problem but certainly a big problem.

I predict that Welfare will be tied to sterilization. If you are useless, the tsxpeyers might support you. But not your kids.

Who needs AI. Looking at some of the millennials we already did a pretty damn good job.

Not even pandering.
Simple technologies have been doing it just fine.
This was THE subject of Murray’s “Bell Curve”, 20 years ago.
It was already visible then. The US underclass is mostly unemployable, but only part of that is cultural/educational/family, and much of those things are themselves just fallout of physical deficiencies. A good part of the human race is already obsolete.

There will always be work in the trades. AI can’t build roads or fix a heater.

Hold the elevator. I’ll be needing a ride too before the total destruction is done.

Humans are naturally creative beings.

People who don’t know that and don’t want to fulfill their creative nature are already, effectively, useless. People who do know and pursue that will always be needed.

Here's another famous book that predicted catastrophe for the human race; it's an oldie but goodie but was quite the rage at the time:

Cripes. Anytime you see a politician you are seeing the useless class. Lobbyists, pundits, college professors.... we are already overrun with useless individuals.

This kind of happened in the early/mid industrial age when people moved from subsistence farming and hand made products and there was an excess of labor.

What happened in England was the creation of lots of household servants — ladies maids, butlers, cooks, etc.

In America, we just kept expanding out.

I expect a little of both to occur. Decentralization and distinct class lines being re-drawn.

Oh not you Laz. We will always need philosopher kings such as yourself.
I for one almost equate you with late, so very great Dr. Raoul.

In my humble opinion, colleges and universities need to be totally revamped.

We have an unprecedented amount of information available for almost nothing today on the internet.

What we need are institutions that teach and motivate students to access this information and learn on their own.
