Well, this conflict does look more and more like a proxy war with the US on the side of the worse terrorists, so that is plausible.

The Cold War with the Soviet Union was pretty much put into stasis while Ronaldus Magnus was at the levers of power. Any time the Democrats get back into power, all these ramifications and aspects of the Cold War seem to get reactivated and whipped into a lot of paranoid frenzy.
