The faction you're referring to, I believe, is the Orthodox Conservative and Wall Street faction.
That faction was soundly beat due to corruption, "Free Trade", open borders and endless foreign "adventure" with no strategic US interest at stake. Not to mention their complete abandonment of the Rule of Law.
