The part about flying into the canopy during an ejection, is partially wrong. There is molded into the canopy a “string” of det. cord. During the ejection process, the canopy is fragmented & blown away form the flight crew, right before the ejection seat is activated. If the person is lucky enough they’ll return to flight status in a few months. The spinal column is compressed to such an extent that a person is only allowed to eject 3 times during a course of a 20 + year career in the military aviation. They can loose up to 3 inches in height with every ejection, because it is so violent.
I am/was USMC 7051 [Crash Fire Rescue], 0811 [Field ArtyBtryman],0151 [General Admin Clerk],0121 [Personal Admin Clerk], ect....in my 10 years,7 months,4 days of Marine Corps service [both active & reserve time]

That is only on the AV-8B.

The F/A-18 Martin Baker seat has two 'horns' on them that fracture the canopy.

First, thank you for your service. Secondly, the near 3 inch loss of height is shocking. I didn’t know that! Is that height loss permanent?
