You miss the point, Kristol knows his guy can’t win. He just wants to stop Trump.
There are always a slew of independent and third party presidential candidates on the ballot. The Libertarians have been doing this for more than 40 years, they have a party and organization and they hover around 1% of the vote in a good year.
I don't see a lot of people digging through the dozen or so third party and independent candidates on the ballot to cast a vote for Mitt.
