Firecrackers? You gotta be kidding. What if the sounds scared the gorilla and he saw the kid as a threat and then harmed the child or worse. This probably wouldn’t be a big deal if the ape went to the other side of his confines. But as I understand it the gorilla was basically handling the child. Takes about two seconds to understand what needed to be done. People’s judgements scare me sometimes.
Most black FReepers left years ago.
I actually watched that movie the other day. I am sure that was a .45-70 or prop look alike.
I would imagine the shooter was not the decider.
The shooter probably operated under orders from a superior.
When these people care as much for babies killed before and after an abortion, then I’ll have sympathy on them for this gorilla.
Part of the problem is that we have been desensitized to the dangers. I once saw a father wading out to within of feet of a bull moose with his child sitting his shoulders. This was in Rocky Mountain National Park. No doubt the animal would have been blamed if it attacked. Or the time some magpies were dive bombing some kids while they were chasing the baby on the ground. The parents were upset and too stupid to realize.
After watching film of that gorilla dragging that boy all over the enclosure, including through water, I believe that child was in danger. I think it was probably typical behavior for a large ape and its offspring; but, a human child is not as strong as a young ape. Also, head injury looked like it could be an issue. So, I agree with Jack Hanna.
Does the child’s life matter?
I think so.
Let me be very, very clear with you: You ALWAYS WATCH YOUR KIDS anywhere, anytime and NEVER TAKE YOUR EYES OFF OF THEM IN PUBLIC.
I’m an old style parent (now 70)and believe me, me, or my wife NEVER took our eyes off our child in public! The other thing that is missing in today’s society is teaching your children that bad behaviour results in bad spankings (pain). Today, you simply reason with them or simply ignore them because taking measures to measure out real punishment is either looked down on or simply something you don’t want to do that will make the little brat “hate you!”
It is EXTREMELY RARE today to see well behaved, good mannered and obviously well raised children today. We did back in my day but why do the rarely exist today???
I think the answer is obvious if you simply look around and compare this generation to ours prior to the 60’s.
“You joke but a couple sicko posters at the Washington Post comments section already state that the since child is black and that it will just grow up to be a taker”
Probably race-baiting government trolls, comment bots, or useful idiots. All not worth the effort of a single fart, let alone a shit.
“My only question is why wasnt he tranquilized?”
Get smart.....they had to act instantally...the gorilla was slamming the boy on the ground and attacking him. How fast does a tranquilizer work? How long before the gunner can fill it, load it in the rifle and what if he missed?
Shooting was the only solution to save the boy since a bullet would INSTANTLY kill the gorilla before he INSTANTLY killed the boy.
Whew! Some people don’t have enough common sense to come out of the rain.
My eldest girl, was easy to handle; but, then God decided to send me an actual "child". She was very fast and could disappear quickly. I got a harness and leash (I forget where, it's been more than 2 decades). I was afraid I would get flak for it; but, instead people would stop me and ask where I got the harness. A lot of them were older people, I think grandparents, who were having a tough time keeping up with a young child. I never got any nasty comments.
I too liked keeping my kids on a leash in public. You could get the occasional busybody accusing you of treating your child like a dog, but I’d usually just tell them to F. O.
I guess I’m prejudiced because I know the statistics. I only see what’s sticking in my face, every minute, every day, every paycheck. Why can THEY not? Not directed at you, BTW.
Some people just don’t seem to think-I’ve seen that kind of idiocy with tourists out here, too-at least one or two children of tourists drown in the river every summer because their parents let them go in the water without lifejackets-or adult supervision-they usually end up getting swept away on rapids and are found drowned as far as a mile or more away-there are dangerous rapids warning signs at canoe put-in spots and public parks, but some tourists are apparently unable to read...
Here’s what happens next: they use this as an excuse to agitate for gorillas to be treated equally with humans.
The hysteria of this shooting compare to the dentist, Dr. Walter J. Palmer of Minnesota, who shot a lion while on a safari outside Hwange National Park in northwestern Zimbabwe. We remember how his “murder” set off a fierce outcry among animal rights advocates who called for his head.
This latest episode should raise considerable revenue from donations to these phony animal rights hucksters. Watch for their ads on a TV near you.
Life’s full of tough choices, libs. Grow up. The right one was made.
I remember the occasional child cruelty comments directed at my mom and aunt in stores and other places by snarky women-who did not have any kids with them-that was in the late 50’s-but not many. by the time my cub was walking, I could not find one of those harnesses anywhere-that was in the early 70’s-and when I asked at a baby store if I could order one, you would have thought I’d asked for cyanide-laced cookies for the kid from the look the woman at the counter gave me...
I’m sure there are some liberal cities where you would get ticketed for child abuse if your kid was in a harness and leash today...
Saw a guy in RMNP last year walk a hundred yards across closed sensitive tundra to take a pic of a bull elk from 15 feet away. His wife was crying on the shoulder of the road over his idiocy.
At Yellowstone a ranger stopped a woman whoh was trying to put her son on a buffalo for a picture.
This is what happens when a society becomes so removed from nature that they think all animals are pets or props.
I was charged by a momma moose last year when I came upon her and her newborn in thick willows. It was not fun. She was incredibly fast.
