See Dante’s Divine Comedy; “Hell.” Dante has a class of people that were so bad their souls were in Hell before they actually died. Their bodies were animated by demons. I like you think she is possessed by a demon and her human soul is in Hell.

I re-read the Niven/Pournelle "Inferno" a couple of years back. I first read it about 30 years ago, and was inspired to read Dante's translated original. For period stuff like that, I usually try to get the annotated versions to explain things in context.

I don't recall "souls in Hell" from either, unfortunately.

Great analogy, though.
