Milo Yianapolis calls it identarian politics, politics determined by one’s identity. It is a liberal tendency to group people by demographic characteristics, and then they assign an official “identity”.
If you measure success by the diversity of identities, having someone of a new group take power is a positive thing.
One of the negative side effects of identity politics is Balkanization, preventing groups from working together because they see each other at odds.
A more pernicious effect is having an official identity and punishing those who don’t fit the official check list assigned to it. The liberals have stereotypes for those identities like all LBGT and blacks are Democrats. Hold contrary beliefs, you aren’t really a member of the tribe. And you get treated worse than the evil racist whites who we assume are bad. Hence the abuse of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who as a conservative, isn’t really black, or Milo Yianapolis, a homosexual British Breitbart editor, called homophobic for criticizing the same sex marriage movement’s silencing of speech and pointing out how many lesbians are man-bashing.

Thats why the left rubbed me the wrong way, I hate the whole idea that I belong to some community of people I could probably care less for all because of my skin color, they way I see it is this, unless I privately choose to associate myself with you and your group, we are not in the same community in the sense.
