Thailand has been marking 70 years since King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning living monarch, ascended to the throne.
The celebrations began with a religious ceremony in Bangkok, led by 770 Buddhist monks, an auspicious number.
The 88-year-old king is revered by Thais, for whom he has been a figure of stability through the country's decades of political upheaval.
But he is in poor health and has not been seen in public for months.

That’s a long time to spend in the loo.
Oh they will celebrate alright.
It is an offense to slander the Thai king in public.
"Thailand's King Bhumibol marks 70 years on the throne"
Wow.
Westerners have a hard time understanding this, but then again, we in the West are busy destroying our societies with cultural marxism and divisive leftist politics. A country needs symbols of unity of culture, tradition, and national purpose, or they won't exist for long.
Talk about job stability.
Don’t they wear hats that look like lampshades?
Or maybe that’s Siam. Burma? Myanmar? I can’t keep up.
Thailand?
They like him over there.
Lese majeste is treated as a serious crime.
RE: Your Unfunny Chopstick Cartoon
It’s a huge myth that Thai food is eaten with chopsticks. The Thais use a tablespoon in the right hand and a fork in the left hand.
(If you go to a Thai restaurant in the USA and see Oriental people eating with chopsticks, they are Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese or Korean.)
Sit down around Thais and then point your toes at them. You will have lots of fun.
