Many people have said or written that while Donald Trump supports the Second Amendment, talk is cheap, and we do not have actions to back up the talk.
There is some truth in that. Donald Trump does not have a legislative record to show actions to back up his words. But words have meanings. If a nominee is unwilling to give us words in support of the Second Amendment, why should we believe that he will go to bat for us in the legislature, in the executive branch, or in the courts? If the nominee is too concerned with being politically correct when running for office, even in the primary, why should we believe that they will be willing to take more heat while in office, facing re-election, or under media pressure?
If a nominee will not specifically defend the Second Amendment verbally and in writing before being elected, why would we expect them to do so afterwards?
Here is the record of Republican nominees over the last hundred years to see how they compared with Donald Trump.
The Second Amendment was not an issue before 1968. In 1932 Franklin Roosevelt had pushed through the first serious federal gun control law. It impacted few people at first. It only had an effect on machine guns, short barreled shotguns and rifles, and silencers that crossed state lines in interstate commerce. Most people paid little attention to the onerous regulations and taxes that were imposed. There were few prosecutions.
Even as late as 1964 Barry Goldwater, when he spoke of the Second Amendment, spoke of it in the context of hunting. From scribd.com:

Damn Right!
Trump carries.
And he will continue to carry as President.
Yep true.
How I pray you’re right.
Trump’s two sons who are both gun guys have brought Donald all the way into the light on guns.
I firmly believe that all law-abiding, qualified American citizens ought to have the right to carry. We desperately need to have the chance to defend ourselves especially since our government won’t do what must be done to defeat our enemies!!
This comes from a now former democrat woman who hated the mission of the NRA!!
Gun-free zones are soft targets, open invitations for terrorists and other deranged criminals.
Welcome aboard. When did you change your opinion about the Second Amendment?
What was your AHA! moment?
He is true conservative.
As Laura Ingraham said, why would he fake being conservative republican and take all this flak from all sides? Wouldn’t it be a hundred times easier to run as a liberal democrat and have the dems, media, celebrities, one world GOPers and neocons on his side?
He is a conservative. The only one we’ve seen in a very long time!
Maybe we’ve forgotten what one looks like
I know Trump has a concealed carry license and has carried in the past. Does the Secret Service “allow” him to carry now?
Thanks for the welcome.
I guess it culminated in the combined ISIS attacks in Paris and San Bernadino. Trump’ persuasive argument about those tragedies may have either prevented or minimized made me see the light!!!
This new recognition about how crucial it is for average citizens to have a fighting chance to protect themselves also caused me to reflect on the plague of school shootings.
I now believe every school should have trained security guards and teachers on campus/school grounds. Innocent children cannot be offered up as lambs to be slaughtered.
Gun-free zones are insane concepts in this age of terrorism!
Our military personnel should be able to readily access their weapons as well.
I simply became exasperated at our government’s utter stupidity and profound weak posture in not resolving to obliterate terrorism abroad and keep elements from infiltrating our borders. I WANT THAT WALL NOW!!!
Thanks again for the warm welcome!
Thank God for Mr. Trump, who cannot become POTUS soon enough!!
Clarification:
My AHA moment came with the combined ISIS attacks in Paris and San Bernandino. Trump’s persuasive argument about how those tragedies may have either been prevented or minimized if a few good people had been armed made me see the light!!
Please read both of my new responses, including my clarification/correction.
Basically, my AHA! moment was Trump’s argument about how the attacks in Paris and San Bernadino might have been prevented or minimized if a few good people had been armed, with bullets going in the opposite direction!!!
Congratulations.
The law-abiding armed American stops between 600,000 to 2.5 million crimes nationwide every year, according to the FBI’s numbers.
In San Bernardino, California, lots of innocents were murdered.
In Garland, Texas, only the terrorists got killed.
Guess which state has more firearms restrictions against the law abiding gun owner?
*Unless you’re on a secret list for secret reasons...
All right, name the Republican nominee that was more vocally pro-Second Amendment than Trump.
You did notice all the caveats that Trump put into that statement, correct?
Thanks very much.
I’ve just come to the conclusion that gun control restrictions are naive, not to say unconstitutional!
I thinks I remember hearing that Obama’s home state of Illinois has the strictest firearms restrictions against law-abiding gun owners. Hence, the astronomical murder rate and shooting sprees in Chicago.
Here is a link to a list of mass killings stopped by armed citizens in the United States.
