It is possible that he realized he wasn't going to be selected as VP and was vulnerable to overtures coming from the #nevertrump crowd.

I’ve been thinking it through. This would have been a minor blip, and Trump would’ve clarified and expanded on his concerns about the judge, then moved on.

Looks to me like Gingrich let the fawning VP talk get to his head. He’s been way over the line lately in his attacks on Trump.
That's exactly what he is. He screwed the pooch in the government shutdown melee under Clinton. He's a smart guy, but he says the right thing on a less reliable basis than Trump does; and I would not trust Gingrich to do the right thing, on anything.
