TWA 800: Breaking -- Air Traffic Controller Tells All
American Thinker ^ | 6-13-16 | Jack Cashill

Posted on 06/13/2016 8:53:08 AM PDT by Lockbox

As I hoped would happen, American Thinker’s series on TWA Flight 800 has prompted individuals with first hand knowledge to come forward. “Mark Johnson” is one. An air traffic controller (ATC), he worked the night of July 17, 1996 -- the night TWA Flight 800 was destroyed -- at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) located in Westbury, New York.

Johnson has provided me with his real name, and I have confirmed that he was in a position to know what he says he knows. He requested that I use an alias because he has children who depend on him. The federal government, he believes, “will seek revenge, retribution and/or any other remedy they feel like. I would be fearful my pension would be at risk.” I have heard this sentiment voiced by many people involved in this incident.

Although Johnson was not responsible for tracking TWA Flight 800, he spoke directly with the ATC who did. In fact, he asked him “plenty of questions to prepare myself for the ‘suits’ who were beginning to arrive.” Along with several other ATCs, he viewed the radar tape of the incident. According to Johnson, “A primary radar return (ASR-9) indicated vertical movement intersecting TWA 800.”

An advanced radar system, the Northrop Grumman ASR-9 is able to detect a “target” in severe clutter even when the target has no transponder. The absence of a transponder is what distinguishes a “primary radar return” from a “secondary” one. In others words, the radar picked up a small, unidentified, ascending object intersecting TWA 800 in the second before the 747 “disappeared from radar.”

And how would that work exactly?

Even German U-Boats had anti-aircraft missiles that could be launched through torpedo tubes. Theirs didn't work very well; however, I suspect ours would.

"...we know that at the time of explosion TWA800 was higher than the effective altitude of MANPADS missiles."

Wasn't the altitude of TWA800 at the time of the explosion 13,700 feet?

If that's true, and speaking strictly in terms of altitude capability, it seems there would have been a number of MANPADS available at the time with that range capability, a few of which are here (SA16, SA18, FIM92, Grom):
Comparison chart to other MANPADS

And how would that work exactly?

At the time of TWA800, I believe a multijurisdictional military exercise was being run to combine multiple assets into one integrated warfare system. I wish I could remember the name of the exercise. Anyway, all that would be necessary is a sub to act as a launch platform, assuming that a vertical launch tube could be modified for the purpose. Then the other assets, ships, aircraft, land based, would guide and track the missile, perhaps even launch it.

The theory I read at the time was that the coordination software was being tested and the launch was either a complete mistake because it was supposed to be virtual, or it was supposed to be a dummy warhead, or self- destruct. None of those theories actual hold water for various reasons, though. That’s why I’m left winding if it was a deliberate kill ordered by the White House, specifically Hillary, against someone on the plane. After all, the Clintons did Waco, so I wouldn’t put shooting down a commercial aircraft past Hillary at all. And done this way, she could always blame the Navy for a screwup. But of course, I’m still puzzling over the whole thing.

Please forgive me, but I cannot supply details, though I have every confidence of my source. Government screw-up and subsequent cover-up. Believe it or not as you choose, but know that *I* believe it.

Without any details I hope you can understand why I would have a hard time believing it.

You can fire one with only one or two knowing where it is headed and where it hit.

Probably not.

That’s slant range, not necessarily altitude.

Nazi Germany didn't even have anti-aircraft missiles that worked on land, I find it hard to believe that they would have one for submarines.

But let me be more specific on my question. How would the submarine know that an aircraft was in the area? And how would they guide the missile to the target?

I remember reading shortly before the plane went down, that an ABC executive in charge of the news, who had the authority to do so, was looking at the success of conservative talk radio, and the economic floundering of ABC news at the time, and made the decision to completely revamp ABC television news to reflect a conservative point-of-view rather than the liberal viewpoint of all of the major network news. I later read that this executive (whose name I do not remember) was on that plane. But nothing was ever said about this by anyone, ever, not even the best conspiracy theorists out there, so I just regarded as my own personal conspiracy theory, cleverly created by paranoid me. Of course, that was back in the day before all of the creative YouTube conspiracy theories where I learned that I’m actually not as clever and creative as I thought, a piker in fact.

"That’s slant range, not necessarily altitude."

Indeed, as simply stated, there were a number within technical capacity.

They don't sink civilian ships with them.

I keep forgetting the other issue. All sensors related to fuel systems are “intrinsically safe”. They cannot make a spark or a wire hot enough to ignite the fuel even in the presence of oxygen.

...

As indicated in the NTSB report, the “safe” wires going into the tank shared a raceway with high voltage wires and there was evidence that shorting could have happened.

I completely understand. I can only say that it is a first-hand account by someone in a position to know, whom I believe absolutely and without reservation. US assets were destroyed by US assets, at least one US military member killed, and the firing asset crew was locked down, interviewed, threatened and placed under observation.

The tank was almost empty and filled with fumes.

But no air.

...

I’m pretty sure there was air. What makes you say there wasn’t?

An interesting oldie, five years old. I found it looking for ever-present Asst Atty Gen Jamie Gorelick’s involvement. Scroll down a bit for that.

The question I always wondered was why the fleet of planes were not grounded until this defect was fixed, like they always do with every other serious plan mishap.

Caveat: I know thing of this incident, nor have I read the NTSB report on the flight, just I recall at the time the issue of the exploding tank required no rework, when just a few years previously the Alaska airlines flight that went down required a new maintenance schedule and the Trans air flight that went down required a change in what was allowed to be shipped in the air. if there was an issue of exploding fuel tanks it makes me wonder why nothing similar was done.

Also the idea of a transatlantic flight taking off with an empty tank seemed kind of fishy. My father was a pilot and he said they always had to have extra fuel to allow both a secondary or third airport in case of an issue.

That said it is hard to keep a conspiracy quiet. One hopes if there is something to this it will be revealed when the Trumpenator takes office.
